It's not really that mind-blowing.
My own theory is that Sans, Papyrus, and W.D. are all "Dr. Gaster's" from parallel universes. Sans and Papyrus were brought to W.D.'s timeline through his experiments with determination and fun values. At some point, the device W.D. used to bring them there broke while he was using it. This caused him to be split across time and space, and simultaneously trapped Sans and Papyrus in a timeline that isn't theirs. This theory still uses almost all of the in-game evidence MatPat used, but explains how all 3 could exist in one timeline at the same time.
Time travel be trippy yo. His pieces could have been sent to the past, literally to before he shattered, and ended up helping him with the experiments that made him shatter.
I mean you have to realize Toby didn't write in that he was shattered across space, but that it was across space and time, so probably his pieces are more all over the place than Chrono Trigger's plot.
