Who is more powerful: Sans or Asgore?
Keep in mind that I'm not talking about how difficult their fights are. I'm talking about their powers according to the lore.

Asgore is a powerful warrior. We saw him destroy battle options (the Mercy button) with his trident, he trained Undyne, who's now head of the Royal Guard and quite possibly the greatest (or the second greatest) warrior in the Underground. He is very old (but monsters don't age unless they have children, and Asgore's son...), since we see him at the slideshow at the beginning of the game, indicating that he's been a king even before monsters were sealed underground.

Sans' powers in his battle comes mainly from his karmic retribution and the ability to cheat the system (dodging and no invincibility frames). How he does these, I'm not sure. But karmic retribution is based on karma, the idea that (whatever you do, good or bad, comes back to you). So part of the reason why he's so powerful in the Genocide route is because the player is a horrible being. If he were to face off against someone who is good, then he wouldn't be nearly as powerful.

So, who do you think is more powerful?

Boss Monsters, Asgore's species, don't age past adulthhood unless they have children. Normal monsters do.

Sans is a boss monster as well. Papyrus is a Boss Monster (indicated by his soul's behavior when you kill him), so it'd make sense for Papyrus' brother to be a boss as well. I'm pretty sure every major character is a boss monster, even though I have never seen any evidence regarding Alphys. Oh, and Mettaton isn't a boss

they're monsters you fight as bosses, not boss monsters. Papyrus's soul doesn't do anything special when you kill him?

According to the signs in Waterfall, Boss Monsters have more powerful souls. Regular monsters' souls disappear instantly after their death, but souls of Boss monsters stay for a second or two before breaking and disappearing. When yoh fight Boss monsters (like Toriel or Asgore) their souls appear for a while, then break and disappear. This is what lets us now they're boss monsters. I'm pretty sure the same happens when you kill Papyrus

No, his head just turns to dust after the rest of him.

No . . . Toffee Pop is correct, "Boss Monsters" are just the ones that look like goats. Toriel and Asgore are the only true boss monsters in the game (as in boss of the underground). They're the only ones whose souls appear momentarily upon death.

Asgore is powerful with 80 ATK and 80 DEF.
Sans is only strong against someone with an attack that can be easily dodged. He's OP against a human that uses a single simple attack, but he would be defeated easily by pretty much any monster in the Underground, as monsters use more flurried attack patterns.

I notice most people who attempt to RP as any version of Sans forget he only has 1 HP.

Asgore is very powerful, however, as demonstrated in Sans' boss fight, he is shown to possess an ability no other monster seems to have: He is able to dodge most attacks, as well as use magic and karma to drain you of your health. While these powers are very impressive, so are Asgore's. As you said, he is able to break your buttons instead of pushing them, and he was even able to train the wild Undyne (NGAAAH!) and he can also use fire magic. Comparing their abilities really depends on the opponent. Sans' use of karma would only be harmful if you had done something wrong, but the only reason that Sans would ever fight someone in the first place would be if they had done something wrong, so his karma is almost always harmful. Comparing their battle habits would be impossible to do in the same timeline, as Sans only attacks in Geno and Asgore only attacks in Pacifist. Again, it just really depends on the opponent.

I won't disagree you on that for sure. But hey people can still call them a boss monster. If they want to. Even thought their soul don't behave like Dreemurr soul.

You realize Karmic Retribution is not poison, it makes the damage you would have taken anyway tick away more slowly (it's like the HP scrolling in Earthbound and Mother 3). It's actually there to make the fight EASIER.

That's true. It makes it as if you had almost 2x more HP
