Big noob here !
Can someone explain how the gunblade works :/ all I know is that you have to hit the G key but when ?? Also when do the Limit breaks kick in ? in FF7 you had a bar which filled with the magic power of the rainbow every time you got hit but here I just dont know.

The limitbreaks kick in if you have aura on the chars or if they are low HP You see an Arrow next to your attack if you prees the direction you can use the Limit, for the gunblade you need the right timing while you attack

Yes, you should strike G/R1 when Squall hit the enemy.

Damn this reminds me of Xenogears and Chrono Cross, only there you had to hit button keys to perform combos :/

I just have all their abilities on Auto, only time i ever got low HP was at the beginning of the game.

Wish they would have just kept the limit break mechanics from FF7, woulda been alot less hassle.

Just hit the button when you hear the "ka-ching" sound from the sword strike. You can then see a small explosion on the enemy and it adds some extra damage. Afer a few successfull tries, you should get the hang of it.

Thats for the critical hit, which is where the auto comes in.

Only problem with the auto is that it's not 100%. If you can get the timing down, you can do it pretty much 100% of the time.

Press it when you hear the slash sound when he attacks, and for his limit break press when the timer lines hit the box.

For Squall's Renzokuken you want to click whenever the blue bars reach "here" on my crude ascii meter:
[ -- ][here][ ---- < ------ < - ]

And since Renzo is so ridiculously good, keep in mind you can hit yourself to drop your HP. It's totally worth it sometimes. And it's definitely worth learning how to time his trigger since it makes his attacks hit 50% harder.

thank you very much, man this game is more complicated than FF7 in a bad way :/ FF7 was so simple and cool, its still the best FF system seriously, at least in my opinion.

Bumping this thread to ask a couple more questions- the hit "G" for critical attack is only for Squall and doesn't work for other characters? Does it do anything else other than give you a stronger attack? The explosion animation is the only way of knowing if the attack succeed? Somehow I remember the game telling you "perfect!" and "good!" but it's quite possible I'm confusing it with another game.

G trigger for critical hits works only with Squall and Seifer. There is a dowside to this too. Squalls crits hit only 50% more damage while other characters make 100% more damage with their crits. That is really not a downside since you can crit 100% of the time with squall so you basically have permanent 50% damage boost for normal attacks. You can tell if you crit from explosion, sound and damage. Timing is really easy once you get the hang of it
