- Click Play button in Steam client
- Click Play button in FF8 launcher
- When you get list of commands for keyboard press "x" button on your keyboard
- ????
- Profit?
1. Plugged in controller - set as prefered device in Windows 7 & verify it's functioning
2. Start Steam
3. Start FFVIII
4. Controler does nothing - button pushes don't register in game or on controller settings tab
You can update them through WU if you have controller plugged in.
There is a controller setup in the launcher, and also in the config screen in the game (may have to use that to config some controls like the D pad)
I am using the Xbox One Controller with cable for Microsoft Windows and I've had the same problem, and the "hit x on keyboard" solution didn't work for me. I'm running Windows 10, and I know the secret sauce (at least for my OS) to fix this problem:
1) wait until the stupid button layout screen pops up that blocks your progress
2) hit the "Windows" key on your keyboard (you know, the one that looks like the windows logo) - this should pull you out of the game and back to desktop, granted that you don't have the windows key deactivated when gaming (I know some Keyboards/Software supports this) - ALT+Tab should work in this case, but I haven't tested it out myself. Anyway, while you're back on the desktop but with FFVIII still running minimized,
3) Unplug the gamepad at the controller end (not the USB port on your PC)
4) Plug it back in after a few seconds (duration doesn't seem to be a determining factor in success rate here)
5) Then, click back on the FFVIII icon on the taskbar.
6) Press "X" on your KEYBOARD
7) Voila! You should be past that pesky screen and onto the main title screen for the game AND the Xbox Controller should work.
I hope this works for everyone else. Cheers!
also some tips you could bind the highspeed mode key to R3 and esc(for exiting the game not escape from battle) on L3
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, thank you for saving me from a keyboard-snapping rage fit. I was getting this same BS with my wireless XB1 controller, and it was driving me insane. Just FYI for anyone with the wireless version, replace step 3 above with "Hold xbox button until controller powers off, then power it back on".
Thanks again!!
To echo the above poster, holy ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥! We spent hours trying to get this to work, including downloading and installing xpadder and creating a profile. But this,...this actually works! This needs to be stickied, you deserve a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ diamond medal. Thank you so much.
Thanks guys, but keep in mind that there are a couple downsides with this method. Primarily that you can't use the game booster shortcuts (like F1 for fast-forward and the like), nor can you soft reset by holding ctrl+r. Another user's post suggested using xpadder, and I'm sure it works fine, but a donation-based (read:free) alternative is JoyToKey. I'm using it and after a few tweaks I prefer it to the above method.
Unfortunately, JoyToKey+Xbox One controller doesn't function straightaway, either -- not without a few tweaks, anyway. Follow the steps below to get it up and running:
1) Download, intall, open, and configure JoyToKey (i.e. create a controller profile and save it as FFVIII or something).
1.5)Make sure you map the buttons of your controller using JoyToKey to the same keys on the keyboard that you see listed in the settings>keyboard menu of FF8. It's pretty intuitive but if you can't figure out how to use JoyToKey (or xpadder or whatever you're using) lots of other helpful people have made tutorials, both in written and video form. Just Google it if you're having trouble.
2) While JoyToKey is open, launch Final Fantasy VIII (if you're playing with mods, simply open FF8 with the launcher you normally use when playing with mods)
3) After the Square-Enix logo plays (before the Squaresoft one), unplug your Xbox One controller (or if connected wirelessly, power down) and then reconnect it (cable or wirelessly). Fortunately, you don't need to go back to desktop like you did in the previous fix.
4) If you mapped the controller correctly in JoyToKey, pressing the 'confirm' key on your controller (mine's set to 'A', yours probably is too) you can bypass all of the splash screens and get to playing like normal.
Hope this continues to help others out! Refer to my earlier post if you don't want to download keymapping software and don't mind losing access to the Game Booster Cheats (fast-forward, Magic Boost, etc.) Cheers!
Thanks guys!
Thanks!!
You absolute LEGEND.
Been trying for an hour to get it to work nothing was working. First try and this ♥♥♥♥ works. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ A!
