[SOUND SWAP] Quetzalcoatl / Phoenix sound effects bug
Currently in both PC ports, Quetzalcoatl has the incorrect sounds when summoned. Specifically, the first three of his four sound effects are from Phoenix. The actual game is using Phoenix's sounds when summoning both Quetzalcoatl and Phoenix, so I have made a "dirty fix" to correct Quetzalcoatl at the expense of Phoenix.

If you wish to break Phoenix in order to restore Quetzalcoatl, here's the file you will need:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxb5Tb8W1j0nYWN3SF9sZkpabms

Filename: audio.fmt
File size: 152 KB

Place it into your "\Steam\SteamApps\common\FINAL FANTASY VIII\Data\Sound" directory. (You may want to backup the original file first, if you preferred Quetzalcoatl being broken instead of Phoenix.) Note, it will also work for the original 2000 PC version as well.

With this swap, if Quetzalcoatl sounds any different to the PSX version, it's because of the differences inherent to the sound system in the PC port. I can't help that.

Without a greater understanding of how the game references the audio files, it has been impossible for me to fix this bug properly. If there are people out there that understand what files are actually making the references when something is summoned, let me know... Eidos goofed up somewhere when porting the 2000 release.

Well at least someone is making a start on it.

I'm still looking forward to a properly complete fix on this issue but still thanks for sharing your "dirty fix".

Dude, you're awesome. This was one of the last glarring issues not modded out that was bothering me. Thanks!

I wouldn't count on a better fix soon, if at all, sadly. This issue was known about in the 2000 release, and despite the many mods and file extractors/editors and people that knew more about the game's inner workings, nobody came about to fix the bug properly back then. Interest is most likely lower now than then too, so I'm doubtful.

Well I own the version of 2000 too.

So I know about it. But probably square release an official fix.
They did the same for the steam release of FFVII.

So maybe they will do it for FFVIII too...

Maybe 3-5 months at most.

you just earned 5000xp in fan level. this is a good start to fixing just one of the baser issues.

as for how the sound effects sound in general i'd leave it up to square but 5$ says 5 years from now everyone will ahve forggoten there is an issue that never got fixed. they managed to go 10+ and not fix it.

Pretty much. :(

I'll predict that they fix the music like they did in FF7, even though I prefer DLPB's Anxious Heart anyways, which means I'll probably prefer Roses and Wine to any official patch. But as for this issue, I'm going to predict that they don't fix it.

Well actually it was Eidos' fault in making a poor console port and causing such a dumb failure.
So it's acutally not Squares fault and yes they don't have to fix it.

But if they're really interested in quality I don't think they want to let it like it is.

Formerly it was Eidos duty to release patches but they didn't give a ♥♥♥♥ about fixing FF8.
Eidos was overtaken and exhausted bei Square so probably they take their own hands back on their game now.

But I am still wondering how Eidos have managed to overlook that error. It's one of the first G.F.s the player receive.

Good job. If we want to completely fix it, we need filled soundbanks for all sounds and we need to change the pointers to the soundbanks themselves.

I really want to download this fix but the link appears to be down. Could you possibly supply an alternative? I almost don't want to boot up the game again until I've got it. Thanks :)

Edit: They brought it back up - Nvm!

i hate to say it but they aren't worried about quality period. just go to their support site for this game. all your questions will be answered, just by trying to go through the report process.

if you somehow manage to get through it tell em if they looked at the steam community they'd see how pissed their customers are.

i tried to do it but their system didn't wanna take my DxDiag file (my guess it doesn't recognize newer DxDiag setups.)
