Just lost save data...
I just started the game, and I noticed that out of my 2 savegames, one was missing and the other reverted to an old state. I probably lost about 3 hrs playing. It's probably the great "cloud sync" feature that caused this, is there any way to turn that off for FF8? I don't mind replaying the 3 hrs that much, but I don't want to risk the same thing happening again.

Right click FF8 in your list of Steam games, click on Properties, then on the Updates tab uncheck cloud syncing.
Thx, I'll try that. I'm just a bit worried that there's also something in the Settings menu in FF8 about "Remote sync". It could be that SE implemented their own syncing stuff as well? Anyway, I'll just see have to try it and see what happens.

Similar thing just happened to me. I had a single save file, tried to load it up this morning and it appears the file is missing. 7 or so hours of game play down the drain.

Not a huge issue as I adore this game to pieces so replaying the opening few hour wont bother me too much, but I'd certainly love to know why my file decided to delete itself if you anyone can shed some light.

As Lital posted, check if your Steam-Cloud is enabled. If it tries to save it online and it has no connection, it may dont save the game. The Problem is that it doesnt tell you about it, i think it saves on your pc and when u get back the connection, it checks the saves, and delete the one on your PC which is not in the Cloud.

So i highly recommend to all guys playing ff8, disable Steam-Cloud for this game. Im playing since >20 hours, and never lost any save, i use 1 saveslot for every CD.
Thank you for this. I just turned off the steam cloud.. glad I read this 'cause I'm completing the cards..
You should also back up saves manually too after each disc at least.
Around disc 2 i got sync errors was backing up my saves like crazy after that.
Now my sync trophy data is delayed after drawing and everything else.

I know this is already solved, i'd just like to share that I beat this INCREDIBLY difficult boss I saved right afterwaards, walked outside, got killed by standard monster because i was out of everything, and the freakin save file is GONE. that one boss took me an hour. FML
Just lost 40+ hours of gameplay, now I'm only getting a 'No save data'-message. Steam-Cloud was disabled (always has been), so I guess it is Square Enix' own cloud-thing ('remote sync' under settings -> network) that somehow killed my savegame. Any idea how to disable it?

Edit: And where are the savegames saved on the hard drive? I can't seem to find something like 'savegame.xyz'...

Remote Sync has to do with updating achievements on your SE Account, Not save files.

Save files are located under Documents/Square Enix
Thank you.

Seems like my save files just vanished without a trace. =/
They could have been corrupted some how.. If the save files information doesnt match the data in the metadata file the saves will get deleted.

Did you use a save editor by any chance?
The same thing just happened to me after going through rng hell top abolish random and elemental in Dollet and getting Siren and mini mog, and finally, changing the change rule to diff and making Dollet the main trading region. Four hours. Gone. I think it's worth mentioning that I'm at home with no Wi-Fi other than my phone and I don't have sharing enabled. Besides that, my laptop is on airplane mode. So idk why my saves were erased, but it's definitely worth keeping backups after every segment or so of gameplay
