there's a tool to extract the sounds from audio.dat, but nothing to put them back again yet.
The point is that it is far away of the sound which is used in the PSX version.
Have you ever summoned quezacotl on the pc version?
I owned the version of 2000 where the install disc got a scratch.
I never intended to buy it again since I firstly play the PSX version which was much better.
But I thought this HD-remake (since it was announced as such) would correct some of the mistakes of the formerly PC version.
Now there appears the same audio bug of summoning quezacotl.
I know FFVIII isn't this popular like FFVII is but updating the audio there and doing nothing for FFVIII is a punch into the face of a fan of those series.
I don't think this is such a big issue as you put it to be. I've played the entire game and don't remember hearing any other sound out of place.
But the whole sound is actually a bit downgraded for a PC version.
As I said, I played the PSX version and trust me, the thunder sound and even every other sound is much clearer.
Do I have to post the youtube comparison again?

Just compare the sizzle, when the battle starts. Or the enormous thunder explosion of quezacotl.
And if you want ignore the fact that FFVII received an update for the sound but FFVIII just sound the same like 2000 then do it.
For me that's a big issue since why should be one FF be updated and another not?
The whole series where the money bag for square (well before Hironobu Sakaguchi left the company).
Re-releasing older FF titles is a good idea and I really like to play FFVIII again but why do I have to play a version which is bader than the actually PSX version from 1999?
That doesn't make sense to me.
I am not a consolero so I won't buy a PSX or PS2 only to play that game in the best quality possible.
As long no one find out how to pack those sound files back into a *.DAT only square seems to be able to correct that whole issue.
The PSX sound should be at least the minimum which a console port provide.
so yes, you're right on that.
What we need is to do 'reverb' and 'chorus' over the fx sound (and not the music).
With 'Roses and Wine' mod this might just be possible.
It's not the PSX music but it's still very nice and the quality is perfect.
I am looking forward that someone make a compatible release of the fx sound too.
Maybe square have mercy and provide such a fix like they did for FFVII.
FFVIII re-release isn't long out yet so I try myself in patience and hope...
I extracted the audio files from PSX and they match the PC version.
the thing we're missing is the post effects done on those sounds.
I haven't knew that the PSX used post effects. So when the sound files are actually the same then we just need a post processing method similar to the PSX.
Only thing which could be difficult is remapping the quezacotl sound and inserting the other missing things you told.
I wish I have the know-how to do so :(
