You have to use the magic lamp Cid gave you to fight Diabolos first.

fight him the first possible, because if you wait he'll became more strong and difficult to defeat!

Yes you must use the magical lamp (save first!) And fight him to acquire Diablos. If you missed the magical lamp, it can be obtained from a B item in the Chocobo world.

before you leave for timber talk to headmaster Cid and he will give you the lamp

You need use the magic lamp from cid kramer ,talk with him before go to timber .
