But despite its passive gameplay, and its (in my opinion) un-inspiring lead, FFVIII as a whole does (and will) redeem itself if you keep playing...I think this might what Square intended initally, because the pacing of the storyline is so off, that it is supposed to get you by suprise much later on, and in my case, it was MUCH LATER on, way after the first disc.
Spoiling the storyline on here won't do you any good, so you just have to keep playing. VIII just has a different pace then many of the others: VIII Does not have a plot which kicks off right away like in VII or X, nor does it make as great use of its gameplay style like in XII or XIII; but I wouldn't give up on it, once you get around the junctioning and so forth, it starts to feel like Final Fantasy.
Triple Triad was what kept me playing. I mentioned this on an older topic on these forums, how I find myself playing it just for the card game, instead of the main game itself.
Chocobo World is great too, and that on its own reminds me of old-school GameBoy.
But OK, yeah, as for the events in the story, I will tell you this much: that you are still in the early stage of the game, and it will take a while before things begin to escalate, and there will be red herrings everywhere before you get to the true storyline which will become familiar. (Now that I've been thinking about the plot so much, it does seem like it takes from a novel-style approach, where you have to work a little harder towards understanding it.)
I got into it and enjoyed the game overall but my older brother quit the FF series at this game. he was a huge fan of FF4, FF6, and FF7 too.
the card game helps keep your interest if you like that sort of thing.
Hope you have fun with it.
