Common for dead game?
I'm just wondering if you screw up in learning your Gf's abilities (wasting AP), and level up without junctioning that well. Do you have a dead game and can't complete it or is it just extremely difficult?

There is no such thing as a dead game, worst case scenario you grind out some levels for AP for the skills you need like Stat-J, ability x3/x4, Stat +% abilities, item/magic refine. If your problem is no magic then refine items/cards. There's nothing can you screw up bad enough that you'd be forced to restart.

You're probably right. However, on my first play-thru on the PS, i thought i messed up my game in Ultemecia's Castle, by selecting to have back the wrong commands. I didn't realise there were enough bosses to win them all back and i just could not defeat Ultemecia!

If this is your first FF then possibly you could have a 'dead game' seemingly. However, there is no limit on the amount of AP you can gain so you can level GFs up indefinitely (to 100 at least). A lot of times you'll want to teach GFs different abilities too so you may not need a full GFs worth of AP (which changes as you change GFs).

Bottom line, there is almost no game that is unrecoverable because of the way the enemies level up with your parties' average level.

I see. But what about bosses do they get tougher as you level up?

the bosses do get tougher, if you go on the wiki there's a list with the bossses hp at each level for each specific enemy. I think that even if you screw up in your first run there'd be some ways to recover... it would be just hard and take some time (farm fire cavern where all monsters are forever lvl 5 for AP to get card abilities and convert item to magic abilities to junction to you char would be one).

You can relearn any G.F. Ability by forgetting it with the item called Amnesia Greens, Then you can make them laern any ability from scratch :)

I'm not sure that's entirely true. If you forget 'Item' for instance, i'm not sure you can re-learn that.

The majority of abilities if not all of them can be re learned via Items that you find/make.
You just need the correct item and your set.

Including the Item, GF, Attack commands, etc.

What items re-learn Item, GF, Attack?

Theres plenty of Online FAQS out there that state what items can be used to learn/relearn GF abilities. That would be your best bet.

I ended up with a pretty crappy end-game file when I played as a kid. I didn't really understand most of the game systems (junctioning, the card game, refining items/magic, etc.). I also didn't know that enemies level up with you, so I grinded for levels. I didn't know you could draw GFs from bosses, so I missed most of them. I ended up stuck in the Lunatic Pandora (as Squall) unable to defeat a boss that was there due to (iirc) its powerful spells.

Not understanding that leveling up wouldn't help me, I thought I needed to gain a few levels. The enemies there only gave 1 XP, and I may not have been able to leave that area (I'm not sure, since I never got that far in the game again).

So, from my perspective at the time, my game was pretty much dead.

I had a very similar situation at the end of the game in Ultemecia's Castle. I only won a couple of my commands back, and didn't realise you could win them all. I also picked the wrong ones, so i couldn't defeat what i thought was the last boss, and therefore thought i had a dead game!

The only true "dead game" is if you are completely unable to defeat the boss in the missle base in time. anything else you have time to grind out and draw etc
