Possible Balamb Garden MD-Level bug??

Hi guys, new poster here... been enjying FFVIII upto the part where you descend down to MD level when in Balamb Garden however when stuck in the lift, cant seem to access the control panel for the hatch. Is this possibly a bug? I keep hitting X but nothing happens.

Have you tried pressing X on the control panel thing on the right first? And maybe talking to the other party members?
