Reason I recommend keeping level low till after graduation is cause it's easier to beat Diablo if your level is less then 20.
If this is your first time playing, don't try to kill it. The only place you can do that is at the bridge. Everywhere else, it will just regenerate.
Personally I like to level up Quezactol ( Any way to boost damage ) and use it. Yes it takes some time due to the summon. However its possible to kill the ... "metal crab" VERY fast with him. ( Often faster than it would be to use magic/melee against it at this point in the game. )
Also to note. You only have to fight it ONCE. The rest of the fights can be avoided but killing it does NOT grant a bonus towards your SEED score. ( But running from it takes away from seed score. ) If you want a high SEED score you will want to avoid him. If you do not care as much and are capable of killing it easily enough.. You can fight it a total of 8 times. Its worth about 400 AP each time so.. It IS worth fighting it.
( Things I suggest for Quezactol. 1000 compatibility or at least near that. Sum mag +10%,+20 and +30%, and Boost. Assuming you want to kill it all 8 times. )
*EDIT*
Due to the subject name of this thread.. I keep thinking of "CRAB BATTLE!" XD
Or just hit the function key to enable dealing 9999 damage with every attack regardless of stats. But that to me feels like cheating. I'll probably abuse it though when I eventually go for the "beat the game without ever leveling Squall" achievment.
