Lightning magic works wonders against it. Think it's weak to water magic too, although that's probably junctioned to stats. Tips for quickly defeating it each time... Hmm, use the Thunder GF, can't remember how to spell it's name. Have Lightning or Water junctioned to Squall's attack if you can, and make sure you always get the trigger pull. If you get Sophie's limit break, try for lightning spells again. Also, ideally you don't want to have done too much level grinding by this point. Grinding for magic, yeah. But you want your level to be fairly low until after this event and your graduation.

Reason I recommend keeping level low till after graduation is cause it's easier to beat Diablo if your level is less then 20.
Yeah, but then he can CAST flare at you too. Which when combined with the demi spells (the main reason to keep Drawing from Diablo, other then healing via drawing and casting cure spells) can really ruin your day.
Both tactics work. I mostly try to fight him at low levels due to him getting an attack that will reduce everyone to critical HP (1 I think it was). In my first playthrough I waited till midway through disk 2 to use the item and fight Diablo after he kicked my rear initially. Hadn't realized he'd be stronger too, so he destroyed me easily. Having one person drawing to cast cure on the party can make this fight much easier. Still a long drawn out affair. But less risk of dying.
If you are having trouble with the big metal spider, my advice is to beat it with Thunder. When it starts to fall over, then run away. Now there are times where you can avoid it, like walking instead of running down the hill back to town (you will get startled if you run) and hiding in the shop (instead of running but that will count against you later).

If this is your first time playing, don't try to kill it. The only place you can do that is at the bridge. Everywhere else, it will just regenerate.

Dont think anyone mention this but you should junction thunder to your elemtanal attack with you whoever has ifrit. If, you can summon queztacotl few times before the fight. His summon bar comes quicker also.

I also think you only have to fight him twice. I might be wrong about it. First encounter is forced. When you get to the next screen which should be where Seifer tells that he has a dream. You want to walk not run in this screen. Next screen i think its forced. The bridge itself he will jump ahead of you. You can actually run back the other way and keep doing it and you should make it off the bridge. After that you should be fine.
As I recall, there's a reward for destroying the metal crab thing and reaching the beach with less then a minute (or maybe it's 30 seconds) left on the clock. Could be wrong though and i'd have to double check. Unfortunately I no longer have the stratagy guide for FFVIII. Not that I use stratagy guides in an MMO on my first playthrough. Or for any game in my first playthrough.
Ah yeah, it's the Fire Cavern I'm thinking for where you get extra points for beating the boss with only a few seconds left on the clock.

One thing to keep in mind you loose points every time you run from a battle.

Personally I like to level up Quezactol ( Any way to boost damage ) and use it. Yes it takes some time due to the summon. However its possible to kill the ... "metal crab" VERY fast with him. ( Often faster than it would be to use magic/melee against it at this point in the game. )

Also to note. You only have to fight it ONCE. The rest of the fights can be avoided but killing it does NOT grant a bonus towards your SEED score. ( But running from it takes away from seed score. ) If you want a high SEED score you will want to avoid him. If you do not care as much and are capable of killing it easily enough.. You can fight it a total of 8 times. Its worth about 400 AP each time so.. It IS worth fighting it.

( Things I suggest for Quezactol. 1000 compatibility or at least near that. Sum mag +10%,+20 and +30%, and Boost. Assuming you want to kill it all 8 times. )

*EDIT*
Due to the subject name of this thread.. I keep thinking of "CRAB BATTLE!" XD

Defeating the robot properly actually gives you a hundred point bonus to your seed rank.

I cant do it, I suck otter bollocks, Ive tried it like 30 times, Its not possible. Is there a bug that makes you not being able to compleate this fight?? :O
As others mentioned, it helps to have ground out enough compatability with the lightning GF. It also helps to have Shiva and Ifrit both having the ability to junction strength and elemental attack. Have Sophie using the lightning GF if possible. Yeah that would take a lot of grinding compatability before taking the elevator up and facing Biggs and Wedge. Then have Thunder junctioned to elemental attack on Zell and Squall. Have the best non Thunder spell for it junctioned to Strength for Zell and Squall too.

Or just hit the function key to enable dealing 9999 damage with every attack regardless of stats. But that to me feels like cheating. I'll probably abuse it though when I eventually go for the "beat the game without ever leveling Squall" achievment.
