FF VIII vs. Remaster
I'm trying my best to understand what is difference with the Remaster, here is the small note from what I found on Steam. It is correct?

It is correct, but remaster has ugly graphics: new 3D models keep with old 3D models, problems with antialiasing processing that makes 2D background ultra-blurry, overworld looks mostly broken and worse, a *** Squall that does not resemble the original idea inspired on Gackt. Also it has issues with compatibility with HW and more bugs than the original. Anyway, Angelo Search is good, couse Chocobo World in Steam as it comes it's broken. It is based on the original 1998 Eidos PC Release so its old and some broken couse this, music adaptation is pretty bad.

Thanks for quick reply, I'm glad buying the right version. I agree, most the Characters was not resemble to the original in Remaster. Seem that a remake is a better way to re-release FF VIII. I always not ready to buy this game, until watching this:

Seems like the original is better. Nothing is censored form the ps1 version, correct? Does it play ok with an xbox controller?
The biggest issue for me is the display showing up B1 B2 B3 button prompts when using a xbox controller

As I've loved this game on PSX (and beside of the blocky graphics, it might still be the best version of it), this version is broken in a same way, as the original CD box release for Windows in 2000.

I've made a detailed comparison here.

As you can see, I also own this version.
I've owned the game on PSX, bought the 2000-version for PC but was disappointed as of the sound bug with Quezacotl.
Bought the 2013-version on Steam, but didn't know it was just a re-release of the 2000-version with the same bug.

I've bought the remaster where this issue was finally fixed.
PSX stays possibly best, but the remaster is the definitive PC release for me.
Regardless if it messes with models, even though I would have prefered they would have sticked more to the original. :/

I will be a broken record about this issue, but such a bug on the VERY FIRST G.F. you possibly can use in the game is totally immersion breaking if you enjoyed the original on PSX.

so which version do I buy on steam then?

That's up to you still.

The 2013-version has more and better working mods.
But AFAIK, it does not fix the issue with the summon sound.

If you do not mind that sound bug, you may buy the 2013-version.

were there any changes with 2013?
Just Chill Jan 6, 2023 @ 11:15pm
No. As I said, the 2013-version is basically just a Steam-release of the original 2000-version.

I am sure about that, as that's the only explanation of why the sound bug from Queza (present since the first PC-release in 2000) is also in the 2013-Steam version.

The best version is currently the PSX.
Controls work far better (I am playing FF8 Remaster with Xbox 360 controller, still it's not very responsive) and the sound effects and overall sound is also better on the PSX-version.

Also the graphics on the PSX-version fit better together as everything has the same resolution.
The remaster looks silly with their different resolutions on various models. ^^
Luckily I am using a mod that evens it out a little.

Still PSX is best even though I got spoilt by the modding possibilities on PC, so I am not playing it on my oldschool console anymore.
You could try it out, but I rather do not talk about emulators, as that's not legal... :/

I just want the best steam version. I don't want to hook my ps2. Plus, my ps2 could die one day and sony hates backwards compatibility.

Well it's up to you.

The 2013-version is fair enough, except for me it's the same garbage as the 2000-version with the Quezal sound bug.

As I said, if you can stand this one, you may be good with the 2013-version too.

For me it's a no-go, but that's rather my personal decision. ;)

I prefer the achievement challenge in this version as opposed to the remaster.
If I want to look at better graphics, I'll just go flip through mods after I get through achievement hunting like I did with FF7.
Thanks for the remind on achievements. I'm surprise that new remaster has lower number of achievements.

Achievements: 45/34

Out of the 13 consoles I own only 2 of them are dead and both of them are PS2's XD
So yeah I get that concern for sure.

That said PS3 will play Ps1 games just fine, although given the choice it's still better to play PS1 games on original hardware.

Besides, nothing beats that PS1 start up noise :D

If that don't get you pumped as hell to play awesome games nothing will ^^
Why Sony ditched that I'll never understand, it was bloody perfect.

My Ps1 still works perfectly but I still picked up this version of FF8 on Steam, partly because I wanted the achievements but also because I'm a big fan of FF7, 8 & 9 so I own a copy of each game on every platform I own that they have released on...
Yeah it's a silly waste of money but I don't regret it, they're some of my personal favourite games so it was worth it to me.
