Is remaster worth it?
I purchased this when it released on Steam, and never played it. Just recently finished VII, and am gonna play either this or Crisis Core now. If I do decide to play VIII now, should I spend the cash on the remaster or just play this one?

Any mods worth getting? Will they break achievements?

the remaster gives you the option to fast forward and stop random encounters, but apart from that not much there. the new graphics look worse in my opinion and it isn't even upscaled to 16:9. If you decide to get the regular version definitely get the easy fix to change the game music from MIDI to the CD quality

You're better off going without the remastered version.

It's hard to justify the price tag for new models and small changes in addition to censorship that was put forth by SE ethics department. The version you have is better and with some patience and a little finesse you can mod it to surpass the remaster.

Thanks! I'll save the cash then!

Even that isn't that much of a plus in this case as FF8 has an ability you can teach Diablos that removes all random encounters in the base game as it is.

This version gives you access to fast forward as well, i feel like allot of people end up missing that feature haha it's one of the F keys i believe.

Just my 2 cents, this version is way better WITH fan made mods ( not hard to inst all just read instructions)

The "remastered" version really really felt like a total cash grab. Just my opinion, cheers.

Remastered version has more updated mods. Better backgrounds, better models ( even better that those made by square), ecc.

WAY BETTER IN EVERY WAY. Better gamepad support, speed boost, no encounters toggle, and other cheats. also way easier to reset the game back to load a save file if youre trying to get zells card for instance. also better fonts/menus and models. did i mention better gamepad support?

Only good thing about the original is chocobo world but i never used it as i felt it was kinda cheating

Well, the PS1 original required a PocketStation to use Chocobo World which never got released outside Japan and is the only reason I even have one. The remaster version removes this feature and instead allows you to get originally CW exclusive content via Angelo Search.

the 'remaster' is utter garbage,£15 for just updated character models and blurred backgrounds. Total slap in the face for long suffering fans. im still running the 2013 version fully modded and its beautiful. Over on the qhimm forum the gods of modding are currently fixing the 'remaster' making all the mods from the 2013 version compatible, but even making new ones like giga pixel AI backgrounds.

The remaster has unresolved bugs. Both versions have fast forward and all those cheats. It's just as simple to reload a save on this version. Gamepad support is probably the only advantage, on that note it's worth mentioning there's a mod that brings this versions controller support right up to the same level as the cash grab version.

No, the mod authors are making the current mods compatible with the new version, they are not more updated. There's allot more mod variety for this version. The only models they changed in the cash grab version, were ripped from kingdom hearts or w/e, most of us agree it's not really an improvement, especially not compared to the much higher quality mods available by fans.

Not here to debate, there just seems to be allot of confusion as to the real facts about the difference between the two versions.

Remaster still have better battlefield textures. Original FFVIII does not support high res textures.

It does with mods, i have very high res textures for backgrounds, battlefields, menus, menu icons, you name it lol. Modding this version really does go a long long way.
for me I think it now deserves a remake. this is not a remaster at all

This version isn't a remaster anyway, it's just a PC port.
There is a remastered version on Steam but it's only got minor enhancements, some of them are good but some are meh..

Personally I like that there are better textures and bug fixes in the remaster but I don't care for the brand new character models which look very out of place in the game and also look like completely different people to the characters in the cutscenes.

As for a remake.. years ago I'd have been in favour of that.. but after what Square have done to FF7.. I no longer trust them as a company to remake anything without completely destroying everything that made the original so great in the first place.

They've already ruined one of my favourite games of all time.. I do not want to see them ruin another.

You never needed to engage with that tbh, I tried the Tingle Tuner thing and it was just weird.
Nothing really great about it nor mandatory to enjoy the game.

Admittedly though it was fun calling in "airstrikes" on random enemies sometime.. you could do that, drop bombs from the sky if I recall correctly.
