Lunatic Pandora Mod
Instead of buying another copy of FF8 (I have the original PSX and steam 2013 version I thought I'd instead mod the steam version. I had tried this in the past and screwed my game all to hell. So this time I thought I'd try the Lunatic Pandora mod pack (and support modders in the process) when trying to install this I keep getting this warning message "The file Lunatic Pandora installer-1.bin could not be located."

I'm sure I'm overlooking something incredibly simple here, any advice or tips on what I'm doing wrong?

Much appreciated!

When you first run the .exe, it unpacks two .bin files and another .exe -- you need to then run that new .exe in the same location as the two .bin files that were unpacked. This should start the installer.

its really easy to do it manually all of the texture mods and characters, button mods and battlefield mods all install exactly the same way, once you figure out how to do one you can do them all, the main issues are the very poor install instructions on the majority. The tonberry add on is also pretty bad with poor instructions on how to get working correctly. But once you get tonberry working and know how to install one mod it would only take you a short time to get them all going i wouldnt support these kind of tactics by the ff8 modding community to aggresively monetize their mods its the most mercenary modding community i have ever seen

All these modders are not just fine technicians , but fine people. They do all this work in their own time for nothing but the love of the game, all donations are VOLUNTARY and quite honestly absolute peanuts compared to the work they put in.
Awful_Lawton had a query/problem with a mod , and the creator and said mod spoke to her to help try resolve the issue, i too had a problem once and was talking via e-mail with the author to fix it. Not bad for a MERCENARY.

Didnt Awful_Lawton have to pay for the mod package as a donation, otherwise he wouldnt have been able to use it? and if this is the case you would certainly expect some after care or it would just be a complete scam if the person Paying for the installer package couldnt get it to work.

Also from my memory the guy offering this package is the modder Mcindus who is the worst culprit for forcing you to go through adfly extensions and accept notifications from them to download the mods hosted on qhimm.

I did have to pay through a "donation" when unpacking I have not gotten any .bin files or anything, instead I keep getting a "insert disc 1" message.

I did take the advice to do it all manually and with the exception of Lunar Cry v1.5 (broken link) I got them all to work. Thanks for the help! A shame about the wasted three dollar "donation" but alls well. Thanks again everyone.

@Saintjah - no trojans. No one has ever received a virus or had issues with my files. They don't do enough to constitute a trojan, etc. Your virus scanner is flagging a false positive on that one.

@OLLY - All of the mods are free for download individually with PAGES of easy to understand instructions. Actually, the tonberry page can be a bit convoluted -- but if anything, you get MORE information than you need to install the packages. Sometimes things don't go as expected, but we're all here on the backend to help through the process. I had adf.ly links for years, and they weren't issues until about 10 months ago, when things started seemingly getting a bit predatory, and I've been pulling my mods from the service ever since. Would love to go to a service that wasn't predatory and just had an ad splash page that could be blocked. I'm looking into it.
If you want the 'easy button' that I had to learn to code, and supply over 2GB of mods that I created over many years (1000's of hours of work) with it, then I don't think it being a donation-driven pack is a 'bad' thing or asking too much.

Also, **** adf.ly -- they used to let you 'skip' the ad, and use adblocker to simply navigate right to the download, but a user the other day showed me that now things are so convoluted that you can't even figure out how to download the mods and you get a million redirects into a popup black hole. No more of that site, thank you very much.

@Awful_Lawton -- I'm sorry about that, but I have never heard of this problem. If you download Lunatic Pandora v1.0.exe, then run that, it unpacks two .bin files and another .exe in the location you ran the original .exe from. You then run this unpacked .exe in the same location that the .bin files were populated in and the installer window pops up, with all of the typical agreements, etc. and prompts you to pick an install location. Once you pick your steam/steamapps/common/ folder, the mod pack should install without any issues. Let me know if you ever lose the mods or need to reinstall them in the future, and i'll make sure it works for you.

I have had many satisfied modders respond in the MCINDUS FF8 Ultra Guide over the past few days, and suggest looking through there for answers to many questions if I'm not around.

I'm so surprised you had these issues, and I'm really sorry guys! It's usually a very easy, very smooth process - which is what I intended it to be; as hassle-free as possible -- considering the manual process is tedious at best.

Anyway, happy modding and I hope you enjoy all of the work I put into FF8!

Thanks for that, Wilson. :) I'm busting my tail getting more mods ready and kind words like these really keep the momentum going!

@echoing.silently i absolutely understand what you are saying, and its great to hear you are taking adfly out of your download process top marks mate. Your mods are fantastic along with the other modders listing on qhimm they represent hours of work and should absolutely be recognized for that. my issues were with the ad pages you had to jump through and i couldnt get round this even with a good adblocker . The simple donate button should be enough my freind.

Also i found the tonberry mod is missing some information to get working properly, it says you should extract directly to the ff8 directory folder, if you do this it doesnt work as it you need to do more messing with it for it to be correct, the texture folder that comes with it should be placed in the ff8 directory not left in the tonberry folder- needs to be clearer about that . also i dont beleive it says in the instructions that you need to put the driver files (.dll) that make tonberry work in the directory also and not left in the tonberry folder. It also wont work if it has too many folders you have to click through to get to tonberry through the ff8 directory. it should just be a tonberry file in ff8 directory that you click once and you bring up the tonberry files, if it is stored in another folder called tonberry enhanced 2.04, so tonberry enhanced 2.04 --tonberry---debug0,hashmap,objmap didnt work for me i had to take it out of the tonberry enhanced 2.04 file and have it as just the tonberry file in the directory for it to work and that was the main obstacle i found.

Thank you for all the time you have spent on these mods mate, excellent work

@OLLY -- i think it states to put the 'contents' of the Tonberry folder into your FINAL FANTASY VIII/ steam folder -- which includes two folders (/tonberry and /textures) and 3 .dll's (d3d9.dll, d3dcallback.dll, and zlib.dll). All other parent folders should be discarded. From then on, when you install a mod, you put the hashmap file (ends in _hm.csv) into /tonberry/hashmap/ and then for textures, you put the 'two' lettered named folders in /textures. Honestly, I wish their directions weren't so over-the-top, as it gets convoluted and confusing. Also, those .dlls HAVE to be in the parent folder for them to work due to how the memory injection works.

If you go through my STEAM Guide, the troubleshooting section contains some 'fixit' files as well, just in case you run into issues with missing msvcr dlls and d3d9 incompatibility (damn win10 default doesn't include a bunch of dx9 files)

Have a good one and enjoy the mods! Thanks for the kind words :)

Took me awhile to figure out the lunatic pack as well, I donated more than they were asking for too because I thought some support would be nice, however I was disappointed in the lunatic pack as well it is a bit of a mess now since FF8 remastered came out 2 issues I found were:

1. When installing it does not let you type a directory, it always installs in C:\ProgramFiles\steam\steamapps\common. This was extremely annoying and had to copy them to the E:\ where I keep my steam games. It was more of a nuisance than anything else, easy fix if you could let people install in a specified directory.

2. The Ultra file that is included in folder when ran can not find FF8_launcher.exe, took awhile to figure this one out as well. I couldn't understand why it couldn't find the launcher and after like 3 installs noticed that the lunatic pandora install did not come with an FF8 launcher file. I don't know if this is an appropriate fix or not but I copied the FFVII_launcher file that was there and pasted it on the desktop and renamed it FF8_launcher and pasted it back in the folder and then the tried the ultra file and the launcher loaded.

Anyway after about 4 reinstalls I think stuff is working now, i have not tested if the ultra ff8 launcher file will launch the game with what I did because, it is late now and I have to work in the morning if someone tries it before me please let me know!

An install help file may help avoid people who have issues like Awful_Lawton it would help just because there are 2 install files and that can be confusing on its own.

1. It will definitely ask you for an install location, but only the first time you try to install it. Might be hard to find on DPI scaled Monitors, I don't know. After that, it creates a reg key that automatically downloads it to whatever location you selected the first time, so yeah that's frustrating and my next version will have that fixed.

2. When you download Lunatic Pandora and install it, you should be launching the game from FF8_Ultra_Launcher.exe which should now be located in your parent /FINAL FANTASY VIII/ folder after install. When you launch it, it looks in the same folder for FF8_Launcher.exe that comes with the game that should always be there. When you load the console window, it pulls up the launcher and gives you a 'hit play' message as it waits for you to hit the play button in the installer, giving you time to change your launcher settings if need be.

If you don't want to use the Ultra Launcher, just launch the game normally - as the Ultra launcher only injects gameplay mods *hard.dll, magic.dll, dmg.dll, hp.dll* and the UV fix. To use the UV fix without the Ultra launcher, you must have Roses and Wine (music mod) installed and simply put the NEW 1_FF8_UVInject.txt file that's in the MCINDUS Steam Guide's 'troubleshooting' section into FINAL FANTASY VIII/RaW/GLOBAL/Hext/

Also, there is an install help file, but it's actually within the README section of the installer... I'm not sure where to put that to make it easier - any suggestions? I wonder if you're having a bunch of these issues because of DPI scaling maybe? I wonder what the installer looks like on your monitor.. hm.
All you -should- have had to do was move the FINAL FANTASY VIII/ folder that the install created into your REAL steamapps/common/ folder and merge the two and everything should have worked 'out of the box'. That's why I created the installer this way, but that reg key issue sure is a thorn in my side.

I'm trying to get back into FF VIII and I cannot download anything from Lunatic at all successfully. It wants to go to x86 and I do not have it installed there. I got to the right folder and it doesn't extract any bin files or the FF8 Ultra exe. I am completely stuck. Do I need a newer version of the Pandora install pack or something? I really don't understand what's happening.
