Let me just put it this way: The GFs' strenght in battle doesn't scale up much. They do get more powerful with time, sure, but not by much. On the other hand, your heroes, those guys can get very powerful later in the game if you Junctions strong magics to your stats.
Just a warning I'm giving you. First time I played the game I relied mostly on GFs and had a hard time during some of the final bosses. Just saying, characters are ultimately stronger than GFs.
Even so, when I was playing the PlayStation version and looking up guides to max out base stats, the general attitude of all the people who wrote the stats guides were something like, "You can follow this guide to get the best stats for your characters. You know, if you have nothing better to do. You really don't need it."
The junction system really does everything you need. Stacking stats is just icing on the cake.
