PS1 or PC
Honestly I think this is a kind of stupid question but I'll ask it anyway.

Should I get FFVIII on the PC or the original PS1 version? My PS3 can run PS2 and PS1 games and it's cheaper getting it on the console rather than the PC at the moment, but PC seems more optimized and apparently there's even extra content on it. So I'm at a bit of a problem here over which version to get.

Well, PC version is a lot nicer looking so to say. PC version also has the extra content like you mentioned, sound fix and such. I'd probably recommend it for PC for those reasons. If you like nostalgia and can "handle" the old graphics, then choose PS. Playing FF games on PS has its own feeling, too.

Cool, if this is the case then I'll probably get it on PC then, thanks!

You will be able to play the PC version in any computer you own in the future, so that's a thing.

Do what I did. Get it both. Then see what is easier for you.

Make sure to download music mod which replaces low quality midi files. For an example Rose and Wine mod.
Ok.

I have another question if anyone cares to answer, what IS the extra content mentioned in the store page? I've looked online to see but I can't find anything relating to it.

Cheats and perhaps Chocobo World though it was possible to get it on ps1 too but you needed a special machine.
Oh, I was expecting something along the lines of new enemies, weapons, areas, etc. Shouldn't get my hopes too high I guess.

In that case I might get either depending on price, thanks for the info. :D

Playstation version is the superior version, even with hours of adding mods you still cant get ff8 on pc to be anywhere near as good as the playstation version since the User Interface and other parts of the game is not fixed, also there is many times where you need to press certain buttons at the right time and it can be hard when the game is like "button 1" instead of X. So there is not really traditional controller support, its the ancient controller support where pc controller buttons were numbered.

So they didnt even bother adding in playstation 4 or xbox 360/one support for ff8.
Just get the psx version. Also the pc version requires the roses and wine mod to even work as this steam version for some reason uses MIDI for music which is NOT the original soundtrack. the original sound is CD quality audio using an orchestra. Which translates to it sounding like they used an automatic music to midi website. Its a mess.Even with mods its the inferior version.

I did a side by side comparison a few days ago using a PS3 with pixel smoothing turned on. The PC version looked considerably better; however, the PSX version had a much higher frame rate.

As mentioned above, the controller support is old... so each button has to be mapped to a key on a keyboard. The only time this presented an issue was when I realized I didn't have run setup on my controller and a battle forces you to run.

With sound, I noticed a difference... but I considered it minor. PSX sounded slightly better to me, but not worth all the fuss I read about. I don't know if it's true, but I've read having a higher end soundcard interprets MIDI files differently than most onboard sound cards, so that may be why for me (I run a Soundblaster ZxR).

As many have said above... The PSX version is better, but I enjoy having it on Steam personally.

Well in the end, I got it on PC. While I think I might've even liked it on the PSX, I also like the ease of access I get when I use Steam. While I hate keyboard controls that are poorly made for a console game port, I can get used to it I think. If by chance I might one day lose the game on Steam for whatever reason, I will gladly get it on PSX. Thanks to everyone who pitched in helping me make a choice between the two, I greatly appreciate it!
