"Having reluctantly taken Marlene Wallace as a hostage, Cait Sith forces them to allow him to remain with them, pointing them towards the Temple to make up for his betrayal."

No avoiding Cait Sith. Only avoidable characters are Yuffie and Vincent.
Seraphita Jul 20, 2013 @ 10:26am
I wouldn't really say avoidable. More like missable. Not like they give you a choice to not take them with you unless they do after you find them. lol...
Bishop Jul 20, 2013 @ 10:34am
Not like you actually have to use em if you don't want to anyway..lol..
Techincally no you can't..
But you can't miss him anyway as he is part of the story so it's not a concern.

However you never have to have him in your party at all for anything so yes, you can beat the game without ever actually using him.

Ha yeah, missable is a better word.

Always wondered what it was about Cait Sith that people hated so much. There are mods where he has been removed completely for some reason, or is just the cat without the puppet. I don't get it, honestly. He's not a great character over all, but he's not a STAIN on the game or anything.

Cait Sith, or as I always name him, Cat S**t, is sub-par character already because of his/her/its Limit Break. Yes, I am aware that you can use a certain method to get Cat-face on slots 100% of the time, but that's considered exploiting. With other options like Yuffie with Limit break that hits 15 x ⅝ damage guaranteed, Cid whose Highwind hits 18 x ⅝ damage guaranteed or barret whose Limit Break hits 18 x ½ damage guaranteed, Cat S**t just isn't favorable member to choose from. Also its stat progression is lower than most other characters, on par with Aerith in general. Also, even if you like taking risks, you're better off with Vincent whose limit break most of the time ends up blasting the competition to the next zip code.

I think it's because Cait Sith is an idiot, somewhat. People don't like the fat moogle mounted cat. The cat is cute, the moogle not so much. But you're right, he's not bad of a character fitting FF7 fine as it is.

A lot of people didn't like Quina Quen, either. Maybe it's the weird deformed characters. They must have had a low demographic popularity, as characters like these never returned in later FF games.

They are just weird comic relief characters, sort of like Jar-Jar Binks. Nobody aside from little kids really likes them, and they can easily detract from scenes that would have been more serious or had a bigger impact if they weren't there. Some people like it, some don't. Evidently the latter opinion is more popular since those kind of characters are usually the least liked by fans by a pretty wide margin. I'm not a fan of Cait Sith, but I feel like overall he isn't too out of place since VII definitely has a light-hearted side in terms of story and aesthetic. Now if he had been in VIII, for instance, it would have stuck out pretty badly.

Completely opposite to the Cat S**t, Quina is the best character by far in FFIX
