Suggested Xbox 360 button mapping for like-PS1 experience
Considering this is a console port, and certainly after a decade of playing it, it would seem strange for me to play this game without some kind of controller. If you have an Xbox 360 controller, here is a possible button mapping that may replicate the good old days.

(Make sure you have your controller plugged in and/or turned on before you press play or you may not be able to access the Joystick menu in the opening prompt)

Parentheticals are the specific button number or designation for the button and the brackets are the PS1 original button.

OK - B (Button 2) [Circle]
Cancel - A (Button 1) [X]
Menu - Y (Button 4) [Triangle]
Up - Up (Up) [Up] Pretty self explanatory for the directions...
Left - Left (Left) [Left]
Right - Right (Right) [Right]
Down - Down (Down) [Down]
Start - Start (Button 8) [Start]
Switch - X (Button 3) [Square]
Page Up - LB (Button 5) [L1]
Page Down - RB (Button 6) [R1]
Target - Right Stick (Button 10) [R2]
Assist - Back (Button 7) [Select]
Camera - Left Stick (Button 9) [L2]

I think this setup provides a more natural feeling than the default ones, and certainly is a bit closer to the original, but perhaps not as close as possible. Feel free to share your own personal configurations. :)

EDIT - Many thanks to Sage for his suggestions regarding Page Up & Page Down mappings.

Thank YOU!!!!! :D

I would suggest putting page up and page down on the bumpers. You won't use target or camera that often, put those on the sticks.

In retrospect, that does seem much better. I think I just assigned them as I encountered them.

Do you mind if I edit my post to include your suggestion? :)

First post updated to include Sage's much better button mappings. Mostly just posting again to bring this to the top of the forum and hopefully keep it from being drowned out by tons of people complaining about this game instead of being helpful. :P

This is very similar to how I have mine set up except I have the OK and Cancel buttons reversed.
Good thread though OP.

Yeah, I always find that confusing when playing through the old PS1 FInal Fantasys. FF7 is O for OK & X for cancel, FF8 was X for OK & Triangle for Cancel, and FF9 went back to the FF7 way. Wonder what they were thinking. :P
can i change controller setting with ff7 bootlleag mod? am using a 360 controller.

Change the settings in the config section in game or use Xpadder to map the controller buttons to the proper keyboard keys. (My left joystick is mapped to C+arrow keys so it is used to run. D-pad is for navigating menus with just arrow keys.)

in original black version it was O but in greatest hits (Aerith not Aeris version) it was X and in the controller menu in original game it was fast fix... btw in Japon O was the ok button in most games

Xpadder is dumb and costs money... Get X360ce its free and emulates any controller into a 360 game pad... search it on google,
