Having to log in with Square Enix is not a feature in my eyes and I'd be surprised if even 1% of customers see it that way. This is another irritating DRM hoop that only paying customers like us will need to jump through.
The whole process seems so unnecessary that I don't even want to sign up for an account to play this game I just bought. If any of you out there are annoyed by this sort of thing too please avoid purchasing this game.
No need to start acting tough now is there? Do you think this extra annoyance is really justifiable? Personally I would have thought twice about buying this if the store page clearly said "requires log-in with Square Enix".
*hurries off to check if store page actually says that already*
I'm not sure if this prevents the usage of the Square account, but yeah.
The reason I buy some (most) games on Steam is to not have to deal with multiple accounts. Having to create yet another account is an annoyance and a hassle. It isn't worth it.
Oh well.
Steam is not a form of DRM. There is a widely-used DRM available to people who sell games on steam but it isn't universally used. There are quite a few games for which steam merely acts as a downloader, updater and (if you want) launcher.
