How to config Steam Controller?
I'm using the Steam controller with this game, but the default joystick config is not inline with the original key bindings on the PS1. As such, I tried to remap the joystick buttons from the FFVII settings menu, but I can't change any of the buttons.

Does anyone know how to change the button mappings for the Steam controller for FFVII?
Thanks.

I have the same problem, have you solved it?

Just use keyboard :)

I kind of did, yes. If you put Steam in Big Screen mode, there's a way (and I can't remember off the top of my head) to customize the buttons for the Steam controller specifically for FFVII. There's a whole list of popular button configs that people have uploaded, and I ended up using one of the top ones, which mapped up with the old PS1 bindings perfectly. That's the best I can tell you.

Does that apply to the PC version as well? I just bought steam controller and steam link. have no idea how to program this. no proper documentation available it seems.

Yes, I'm referring to the PC version on Steam. If you have the PC version without Steam, then I have no clue. Sorry. You can definitely use button-mapping programs like JoyToKey or Xpadder to manually map the buttons however you want, but that requires a bit more work. Hope that helps.

Thx Hartley sama, yes have bought the game via steam and it is for PC. I was under the impression that there were special pre-programmed templates we could use. But obviously I am wrong. Will give it a try. Cheers!

Yes, that would have been nice, but sadly that is not the case.

Did you ever find a solution to this?

Yes, I did in that you have to be in Big Picture Mode for the controller to function correctly.

Once you're in Big Picture Mode, go into the game you want to play (i.e., FFVII), but don't actually start the game yet. Instead, customize the controller, and do so by looking at the community-made configs. Very likely, the first or second config in the list will map the Steam controller to exactly what the original setup was.

From there, as long as you always launch the game from Big Picture Mode, you should be fine.

I was looking up how to do this and couldn't find the answer. So I had to figure it out myself. So for future reference to everyone who finds this thread, here is how to set the button layout with Steam.

Set the D-pad to the four directional arrow keys, obviously.
Set Xbox "A" to Keyboard "X" (PS1 ✕)
Set Xbox "B" to Keyboard "C" (PS1 O)
Set Xbox "Y" to Keyboard "V" (PS1 △)
Set Xbox "X" to Keyboard "Insert" (PS1 ▢)
Set Xbox "Start" to Keyboard "B"
Set Xbox "Select" to Keyboard "Delete"
Set Xbox "L1" to Keyboard "PageUp"
Set Xbox "R1" to Keyboard "PageDown"
Set Xbox "L2" to Keyboard "Home"
Set Xbox "R2" to Keyboard End"
