How do you avoid random encounters?
I'm getting fairly annoyed by random encounters while moving across maps.

My current thorn is I need to travel from Costa Del Sol to Mount Corel and presumably a boss fight.

The last time I made the journey I was attacked twice on the way there, three times on the way up the mountain and twice more on the way down to the Mako Reactor.

I assume I can't avoid the ones that aren't in the open map, but is there something I could use to cross the map without running into enemy encounters?

I used a Chocobo to do this earlier in the game, but that's not really convenient enough, as I can't carry those in my pocket or park them at specific areas!

The reason I wish to avoid these is to get to the boss with as much potions and ethers as I can, so I'm not expending them on pointless mobs.

The materia you are after comes slightly later.... you are very close to having access to it (don't want to give anything away) all I will tell you is that it does not make it 0 encounters, just reduces the chance of them happening and you very well may not figure out where to get it if you have not played the game before.

There are other ways than materia, which you will find out soon ;)

You could also use glitches, if you don't have a problem with that. Run for 10 seconds, save, then do a soft reset. Repeat as many times as necessary until you reach your destination. Soft resetting resets all random encounters for roughly 12 seconds.

Don't think the PC version is capable of soft rests though.

I'm playing the PS1 version, purchased and downloaded from Playstation Network.

But I'm disappointed by the savegame feature.
A PS3 has a massive amount of save space compared to the PS1 yes?
I got to save 20, because I was saving near all the interesting stuff and it told me no more.

I paused gameplay at that point, because I'm not sure I want to continue if I don't have more save slots.

I know, I should have purchased the PC version from Steam, but I don't have a Windows computer.
So that doesn't really help either!

Im pretty sure its because the PS3 needs to use a virtual PS1 memory card to save your games. Maybe you can create a second virtual memory card.

Also The final fantasy games are on sale at the Humble bundles store for half price, redeemable on steam, So now would be a good time to repurchase lol... also Lots of other decent games, including The legacy of kain/ soul reaver stuff.

Saw the bit about not having a windows computer but ill leave the info up for other people.

I don't know about avoiding all the fighting but if your goal is to reach bosses with more items try lvling a few times outside of a town with a shop you'll still be fighting but you'll be stronger so you might not need to use as many items to make it to the boss

The only way to cut the amount of battle encounters is to get the Enemy Away materia, this is obtained from chocobo racing and is easy enough to get if you have a golden chocobo (because you will win majority of your games) If you don't have a golden chocobo there are guides on how to breed a golden chocobo which can be done in a few hours.
