TR 2013 was better than ROTTR.
Having finished both the games the story and level design was better in TR 2013 for me.
ROTTR felt a bit underwhelming compared to TR 2013 for me.

it has the best character design in a game ever. you wont find a more lifelike character then lara.
and this game looks stunning, BUT
lara doesnt get hurt at all anymore. theres less blood, less survival themed story and more going to OP lara in this one.

Thanks for the quick reply

I'm thinking a first run through on Survivor [difficulty] will get the blood flowing.

So far this is true, but I haven't finished yet.

Is it a good idea to play TR2013 after ROTTR?
I've never got around playing the previous title and I am thoroughly and utterly enjoying this one. So I am looking for similar games...

Would TR2013 be a big step back or are the game mechanics pretty much the same and only the technical part has changed?

I completely agree. I was disappointed by Rise Of The Tomb Raider. I wrote a review of it explaining why - in a nutshell, I found the writing & character development poor, the environments larger but not as varied or interesting, and the unfolding of new locales and plot progression uneven. While I've played through the Tomb Raider (2013) campaign three times now and attained 100% completion, after completing Rise Of The Tomb Raider, I have very little desire to revisit much of it or attain all of its collectibles. It is a superior game graphically and a good action/adventure game with some truly amazing moments, but it's not nearly as good as its predecessor.

The gameplay mechanics are nearly identical. Rise Of The Tomb Raider has tweaked and refined some of the controls and movement, but it's the same engine and the changes are miniscule. The biggest improvement is the graphics, but Tomb Raider (2013) is still a very good looking game today, especially if you have good hardware to run it. In addition, it's a much more stable game less prone to driver crashes or drops in frame rate. I highly recommend playing it, especially if you enjoyed the sequel...in my opinion, it is a superior game.
