Game running at 30 FPS locked
Any one of you guys who has locked their game at 30fps. What's your experience?

I have my game running at 30FPS and it has been really smooth for this game compare to fluctuating 45 - 60ish I get before. I turned the visual settings all way up and the game is really eye candy. 60fps is night and day compare to lock 30fps but just a temporary solution if you can't get consistent 60ish..

By the way, I got Gtx 970 paired with a five year old i5 2400 hahaha.

It does get rid of the stuttering from fluctuating frame rate, but then I can feel the uniform stuttering as I've got used to 60fps.

Better just make use of Adaptive VSync.

Use standard half refresh vsync from nvidia driver level with nvidia inspector (not adaptive). Then cap the frame rate as well with rivatuner statistic server @ 30 fps (this will take away some of the input lag).

You can also create a custom resolution locked into a refresh rate of 40hz (or any other frequency coinciding with a frame rate you never drop under between 30hz and 60hz) in nvidia control panel (depending on what monitor you have).

So, for example, if you create 1920x1078 locked into 40hz, when you enable vsync you'll notice that the frame rate is capped at 40 fps, just like it would be capped at 60 fps on 60hz with vsync. And that the frame rate is fluid because it's matched to the refresh (not slightly uneven like 40 fps would be on 60hz)

How am I going to do the 40FPS locked you said? Right now I rely only with the nvidia driver. I never tried mixing with rivatuner but I wonder if Rivatuner will create instability/inconsistency with the framerate? Your reply will be appreciated mate.

I can tell you that rivatuner will not create any instability, just the opposite.

I myself prefer to use no vsync on 120hz and cap with rivatuner at something I don't drop under (I only have a 750ti so with ROTTR I cap at 40 fps on lowish/med settings). It's very stable like that and there is also very little input lag.

But anyway I'll post an image to try to explain how it's done:

There's also a lot more driver options from nvidia profile inspector than there is from nvidia control panel:

If you're just wanting to test the 40hz thing, then nvidia inspector isn't necessary, but switch vsync on from the tomb raider launcher if you want to test it on 40hz. Can't guarantee that your monitor can use custom frequencies, but it's worth a try.

Also you can select the 1920x1078 resolution from within the tomb raider launcher, or whatever the native resolution of your monitor is. The only reason I make it 1920x1078 is to be able to force that particular refresh rate in all games (you can't select the refresh in every game, but 1920x1078 forces it)

@fenderjaguar - I'm using Rivatuner for capping @ 30FPS, and after reading your comment I tried 40FPS cap. After changing the cap the game looks smoother now.

Are you using regular 60hz vsync?

The reason nvidia have 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 refresh vsync is because if you cap at 30 fps on 60hz regular vsync, then it can create microstutter every so often (it's the same when you cap at 60 fps on 120hz regular vsync).

Also, 40 fps is 2/3 of the refresh at 60hz. It's also the same with 80 fps on 120hz. It isn't perfect but it does look pretty fluid. You'll also probably find that 50 fps on 60hz can look quite stuttery. Sometimes it's all about matching fps to hz. But personally I prefer as high a refresh as possible (I wish they made 240hz monitors) with no vsync, doesn't matter if the frame rate is low. Higher hz also diminishes tearing. For various reasons I also prefer no vsync at high hz over gsync

My laptop actually has two refresh rates: 60hz and 40hz. This is the only game I have ever played that actually detects my 40hz mode and locks the game at 40fps. Which I use for stability as my fps is all over the place in the geo valley.

snip

I'm using the ingame v-sync with triple buffering, and capping it at 40 FPS with rivertuner. Having it 30FPS locked didn't look fluid at times, but at least to looked stabled.

Is that Intel integrated graphics?

You could try running the desktop in that refresh rate, and the game may have a better chance of running in that frequency. You can also create custom resolutions to force that refresh in intel control panel, but it's nowhere near as good as nvidia

Thanks mate for this knowledge. I tried running the 40fps sync using rivatuner and it's stable bud!!

Folks!
If you are just struggling to run the game at 60FPS, especially to some areas like soviet installation etc., try locking it to 40FPS and you may be surprised of the experience it may give you. I am not advising it, this is just an option for you.

Love the locked 40fps than fluctuating 35-45-60fps!

Mine been using a regular 60hz monitor (Asus VX239H). I tried locking to 40fps (though there very minimal screen tearing) it does look pretty fluid of course than 30fps.. To be honest the experience is almost like playing in a locked 60FPS I tell you.. blahahaha..
