Dynamic Resolution
Has anyone encountered this stupid random 3d rendering resolution downscaling thing?

Do you mean DSR(DynamicSuperResolution) in Nvidia control panel?
I use it to up and down sample Rise to 1440p then leave AA off.
works fine.

no its actually in the game, so when you are in a fog area or have some leaves on screen, the 3d resolution looks like a ps2 game.

Oh..like in Geothermal Valley? I don't notice any Ps2 textures

it happends sort of everywhere. its not really about textures. its like all the objects become more blocky, not their textures

read your post about the 30fps drop...and now this with 'blocky' images..
can I ask what are you running this on...I mean it sounds like you don't even meet the minimum requirements to run the game....I'm not trying to be an ass but it seems like it's a hardware problem and not the game itself.

Something is up with your PC then..I only have an I5 3470, 20gb and a GTX 1060 6gb OC and I get 60fps even in Geothermal Valley, and I just checked the beginning of a new game play thru to verify the 20fps on the cutscenes...it's capped at 30fps..now I did see a milesecond drop(went to 28fps) when the cutscene ended and it was loading the next scene up to 60fps.
I have texture and detail on high, pretty much everything else is set on normal or off(motion blur, all the screen effects stuff,) and I also use DSR for 1440.
--
I suppose you could try different driver versions sometimes older ones work better than the new ones, I mean you should be getting way better fps than me.
--
Oh...don't use very high on textures...that can cause frame drops.

i think the cgi cutscenes are 30 fps and engine ones are not capped. So i see that you are running it on normal to high, but i run it at a high - to maximum and the fps is not a concern for me, because i get like 45-60 in gameplay.
The DSR is that setting below the resolution in display menu, i presume? (could also be in nvidia panel but anyway) if it is then that is really weird that you can change it only in windowed mode

If you are running maxed then you probably have SSXA x2 or even 4...that's upsampling then down sampling...kind of like the DSR

DSR is located in the Nvidia conrolpanel only; I have it turned on(clicked off all the settings) and then I can use it in various games at different settings in game. My TV is native 1080...yeah it's an old system..I think my PC is about 7 or 8 years old now..I just upgrade the ram and the gpu.

You think it is better to use DSR over AA? Isn't it more perfomance hitting then aa?

Well yeah...DSR makes the image sharper because it's taking the 1440 image and shrinking it to 1080...but yes it is more of a FPS hit...resolution and shadows are the biggest performance hits in the game....for me it's finding the right balance between all the settings...like I'll leave pure hair off and use an outfit with a hood or cap
--
I just checked my settings in Rise and I was wrong...I'm not using DSR in Rise , I am using it in Tomb raider 2013...I've been bouncing around the last couple of days between all 3 of the Tomb Raider games..I' sorry I gave you the incorrect information..
--
I'm not aiming for anything over 60fps as my TV is only a 60hz anyway
--
You could get away with DSR ...probably higher than 1440, I know I can 4k DSR in Arkham Knight but I can only maintain 30fps...but he game was made for 30fps in the first place.
Mad Max and TR2013 I use 1440 plus I can turn up the settings in those 2 games.

same here on fps. I can see why you use dsr in 1st game, to make it's ps3-ish graphics look sharper.

Well I can use it in Rise but I only can maintain like around 40/45 fps so it's either I play Rise in 30fps with DSR on or play 60fps with it off.

Personally I think the graphics in TR2103 are fine...I've played a few games with a PS3 emulator and they look no where near that quality(to me) :)

surely pc graphics are better compared to ps3 verision, i've played both of 'em. But there still were some limitations before next gen consoles, anyway...
I just took a screenshot with the exact problem i've been trying to tell. If you pay attention to the bottom of the pistol and gloves you can see that the pixel size is very different compared to ones on some parts of rock for example.

I dont know why is there an outline effect sometimes on lara and some props, but it looks so meh =(

It turned out to be SSAA thing, just turned it to FXAA and SMAA and the ghosting and resolution dump is gone... the game just gets weirder
