SSAA2x @60FPS or SSAA4x@50FPS @1080p
Hello,
I have a GTX1070 Gaming G1 GPU, i7-3770K CPU and a 60Hz 1080p screen. I can play the game at maxed settings at 1080p with DX12and WIN10.
I just hesitate for Anti-Aliasing between SSAA2x and SSAA4x.
As you can see in the title, with SSAA2x, I get stable 60FPS and with SSAA4x I get 50 with sometimes little drops ..
I have to admit that when I switch from a setting to another, and playing, with the action, I'm not able to diffentiate in which one I'm.. (i'm at the beginning of the game, I've just defeated the bear) That's why i'm asking for advice ^^

Which setting would you choose or favor ?

Here are the values of the game self tests:
SSAA2x :
Mountain 59.18FPS (min 37.95, max 84.16)
Syrie : 59.94FPS(min 36.05, max 76.88)
Geothermic Valley : 58.86FPS(min 39.64, max 87.49)
General score: 59.29FPS

SSAA4x :
Mountain 52.36FPS (min 34.50, max 82.05)
Syrie : 44.07FPS(min 29.16, max 61.27)
Geothermic Valley : 47.09FPS(min 21.96, max 96.81)
General score: 48.06FPS

Best regards ;)

Is there any configuration that can really handle stable FPS in this game? The problem is that FXAA and SMAA are not really good, I find..

Everything on max, except AA - set that to FXAA. Those drops are few and minor. And I'm saying this as a person sensitive to framedrops.

The way SSAA works is by increasing the number of pixels the game outputs by a certain facctor. SSAAx2 doubles the pixel output, SSAAx4 increases the number of pixels by 4 etc. At 1080p there is a total of 1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 pixels, so with SSAAx2 there is 4,147,200 pixels (2715x1527) and with SSAAx4 there is 8,294,400 pixels (3840 x 2160 / 4k). This is why the setting is so demanding on your GPU. Other meathods of AA work differently which is why they are less demanding. I just thought I should explain it :D

Yes I understand how works SSAA, I just though that a 1070 should be sufficient for at least 2k.
The disturbing fact is that in the same area, it goes from 40 to 90 in 2x and 21 to 97 in 4x..

The thing is that at any point where the game suddenly becomes really demanding on your GPU and there is a performance dip, the AA you are using is going to amplify the effects which explains why you are getting about half the frame rate when it drops at x4 as opposed to using x2. I always avoid using SSAA in general at the moment because although its playable 99% of the time, the times it does drops it drops pretty hard and its not worth it just for a slightly improved image, at least to me.

Yes I admit that the difference between no AA, FXAA and SSAA is very slight and don't really worst the FPS cost. It's just that my monitor is 60hz and 60FPS is good for me .. so it's useless to me to make it run at 80 or 90 FPS.. the worst is that even with SSAA4x, sometimes it goes above 90FPS .. SSAA 2x seems ok for now, but if I experiment big drops I would put it off and put on FXAA limiting my FPS to 60 max

the game itself is set to run at 60FPS, but most people can not maintain a 'stable' 60FPS no matter what settings you use...only other option is to
go to Nvidia control panel...select 'manage 3d'. select 'ROTTR"...go to vsynch...set it to half adaptive half refresh rate...turn off vsynch in game....there you go...stable 30FPS.

choose a stable 30 or a dipping 60....

Yes I understand, and really I don't Know what is better between 30 perfect FPS or FPS at 60 with some drops to 50/40

well...turn vsynch off completely and watch it go from 120+FPS to 40FPS...:)
just joking

I guess it really depends on what your eyes have been used to.
I don't think anything except maybe a Titan Ti would get a 'stable' 60FPS with everything maxed, the new VXAO gives a nice hit to FPS as is....from my experience(1060) the AO and the basic screen resolution are the biggest factors...I've been using FXAA along with Reshades SMAA which does help a bit more than just FXAA alone.

Like I said before the reason alot of people can't run it maxed is because SSAAx4 is actually outputting at 4k and people don't realise and complain that they can't max it. Anything around a 1070 or above should be able to max it 1080p 60 (no SSAA).
Terepin Apr 20, 2017 @ 2:15pm
Yes, 1080 can run it smoothly the whole time and 1080 Ti even with SSAA 2x. For SSAA 4x you need either two 1070s or wait for Volta.

Well a 1080Ti can do 4k 60 pretty much most of the time so there isn't really any need for AA.
Rayla Apr 20, 2017 @ 3:21pm
Allright, so a solution would be to use reshade SMAA Instead SSAA, or maybe try it with FXAA like Lucasj1210 suggested it..
Rayla Apr 20, 2017 @ 3:22pm
Yes I guess in 4K , AA is useless..
Artoriaz Apr 20, 2017 @ 3:25pm
Actually after watching some more benchmarks its around 4k 45~60 but at 1080p at 1080Ti should be fine with AA. My bad.
