I used all my arrows attempting this. I was filling the bucket with water then the metal basket ended up too high. I emptied some water from the bucket then the basket was too low. Over and over again with the same results. I watched a video and got the "obvious" solution - jump onto the basket as the water is draining from the bucket, gradually lowering the basket.

You can shut the hatch after some of the water has gotton out to get the hight to be level.

Yes, the lever you used to open the bucket is the same lever you use to control how much water is let out.
Either way works

Yes, but to know exactly how much water to drain is a hit and miss afair. That is what I tried many times before giving up. I also noticed that after closing the bucket the basket still moved down for a short while leaving it too low each time.

This is how I work it, so timing is unimportant for me.
Close the lever, swing the bucket through the water, open the lever, immediately close the lever.
It seems to work for me. It is always in the "right" position to break the ice.

Sam has it right. Once you got it through the water, open the lever, then close it right away.Then the beam should balance.
