Sid Meier's Civilization III: Complete

Windowed mode
I know there is no true windowed mode, but i remember that i can set the steam launch options to start it in a sort of windowed mode, so i can still click away to look at other stuff. But, i don't remember what to enter in the launch options, and the old thread that had it doesn't exist anymore. Can someone help, since google is being useless.

This did work, though the wiki page had me set the wrong "Video Mode". Instead of using Video Mode=1152 i used Video Mode=1078 and it worked great.

Set KeepRes mode[citation needed]

1. Open the configuration file (Civilization3.ini or Conquests\conquests.ini).
2. Add the line KeepRes=1
3. Save your changes. The game will now run at the desktop resolution as borderless fullscreen.

* Video Mode is the horizontal window size, with the vertical height calculated based on the 4:3 aspect ratio.
* The game window will have no border.
* The game area can't be resized after the game is launched - doing so causes graphic corruption and may crash the game.

Not everyone can run virtual machines. You need Windows Pro edition to use Hyper-V, Windows' built-in VM system. All the others are retail programs that cost money as well.

VMWare Player is looking at you with a gruff expression.

I've legitimately never heard of that. TIL.

I just realized I neglected to mention the other reason VM isn't really an option for everyone: Setup. Setting up a VM can be a pain in the butt. I know what I'm doing; I managed to get Windows 98 SE working on a VM on my Win10 machine (lol). Many people would probably struggle to set up a Win10 VM on a Win10 machine.

Another pain point is whether you are an honest person or not (at least honest to Microsoft). Even if you run VMware or Virtual Box (another free one), the OS inside of the VM still requires an license key & activation - especially if it is Windows. But again that's only if you want to honor Microsoft's license agreement. Plenty of ways around the license key & activation - none of them strictly legal - and Microsoft is very unlikely to come after you about it - but it is still something to be mindful of.
