I was having trouble making out some of the JAN letters, which might just be down to my hearing, though I got A, B, C, E and G pretty clearly. Great work figuring out this part of it!
"The island is famously named after Colonel Caleb Edwards for his glorious and triumphant slaughtering of countless families during one of the great ethnic cleansings of the 20th century. The forceful removal of an ignorant people to make space for destined holders is a time honored tradition in our still young country. And you will be a part of that heritage, Alex. Do not resist. It will be over soon. * This is abhorrent."
Incidentally, I've only noted three crewmember's names being mentioned, and then Anna, and William Marshall. My guess is that Alex wasn't possessed so much because the other three were chosen.
In the F6 message, it goes something like this: "Well, how do you know you're Bobby Deathbar? * I know who I am. And I know who you are. And nothing else makes a difference." The name doesn't make sense to me, and I'm almost certain I'm just not hearing it right. Could it be 'Bill' William Marshall, the park ranger, found hanging from a tree, presumably in 'Edwards Forest' (surely named after Colonel Caleb Edwards)?
D9's message... "A-Team-Oh Thresher Peterhoff Arizona" ??? Making no sense of this.
I think its actually Maggie Adler speaking in all these messages, asking the questions, except for the lady in G3, who I figure might be Bill's wife-to-be.
The sinking of the USS Peterhoff in 1863 was caused by being mistaken for a blockade runner and rammed by a friendly ship.
There was a civil war USS Arazona, which was a merchant ship that sank after a fire. The WW2 USS Arazona was a battleship that sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor.
That's a reference to an actual event, the Bobby Dunbar kidnapping. This American Life did a whole episode on it awhile ago. I kind of jumped when I heard it, kind of out of left field. It's not a ghost story so I didn't get why they referenced it but when I looked it up the TAL episode is called "The Ghost of Bobby Dunbar". You can find it hear. http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/352/The-Ghost-of-Bobby-Dunbar
1863 and 1963 exactly 100 years. The USS Arizona is a sunk but otherwise intact off Pearl Harbor. Its considered a War Grave. Even though its only a few feet underwater it still contains the bodies of many of its crew.
The voicemail says "maggie".
I agree with this.
I did a bit of researching gizoogling and came across two sunken ships that could resemble the first one:
USS Althea and SS Alpena
Although Althea sounds more likely, the Alpena has a far richer tragedy.
"At least 80 people died when the ship, also carrying a large cargo of apples, capsized in the middle of the lake. The ship was on a trip from Grand Haven, Michigan, to Chicago, Illinois, and was spotted at 8:00 am on October 16 in heavy seas. Some time later, probably due to a shift in the cargo on deck caused by the waves, it capsized and drifted northwest. On the 17th, debris including a piano came ashore in Holland, Michigan, while apples and wood debris were found at Saugatuck."
