GAME WILL NOT WORK UNTIL YOU DO THIS!!

If you try to start the game, you are probably getting the error below
"Failed to initialize Direct3D.
Make sure you have at least DirectX 9.0c installed, have drivers for your
graphics card and have not disabled 3D acceleration
in display settings.
InitializeEngineGraphics failed"


To fix it, go to your steam folder and search for file d3d9.dll

Rename it to d3d11.dll

The game will work now.

Shout out to thread started by lunar2019piginablanket, it's the only reason i was able to find this solution. I just thought it would be helpful to have in English as well.

Is updating DirectX not an option? I think it's up to 12 now.

Updating DirectX will not solve this issue. Even after updating it, at least for me, the error continued to pop up. Changing this file name in my steam folder was the only thing that worked, and then the game was able to load without any issues.

Wow. That's ABSURDLY annoying. You'd assume updating would be the logical thing to do, that the fact that you're doing it would correct problems exactly like this. Clearly there's a thing in Oxenfree's code that looks for "d3d9.dll" before looking for "d3d11.dll" or anything else.

Hmm-- has changing that file name cause trouble with any other programs? Maybe there's something else that does the same thing, looks for DirectX 9 first?

Agreed. Seems like it should be a simple fix / update for Oxenfree's code. I haven't found any other more sensible solution yet, but so far I haven't noticed the change impacting any other programs or having any other unwanted effects.
