Need to play the other games before?
Do I need to play the other games before this to understand the story? I'm new to BlazBlue but it looks pretty interesting to me.

There are abridged (noninteractive) versions of true endings from CT and CS that you can watch. They should give you general idea about the story.

You will miss quite the details about characters, but major things will be cleared in abridged version of story from previous games, i guess. I'd personaly recommend you watch story's of previous games for each(or just the characters you like + true ends) on YT if you interesting in characters stories before starting this game.

Also you should try watching the Calamity Trigger: Reconstruction story episode from CSE. It's easier to understand than Calamity Trigger's actual story mode but still gives a pretty good overview of events of the first game.

Yeah as above I'd suggest to just watch what the story on Youtube.

If you want to understand the backstories of the less important characters you shouldn't skip Calamity Trigger.

You can also watch the anime(Blazblue Alter Memory). It's not the best anime but it tells pretty well the history of CT and CS. There are mangas too, but only covering CT.

And remember the novels that contain a lot of info about the Six Heroes too!

But yea the game has a little "what happened in small words"

Continuum Shift Extend is the best starting point if story is important to you.

It contains 'Calamity Trigger Reconstruction" which is a condensend to a movie bersion of the original games plot.

No. Don't do that. Just don't. I'm a huge fan of BB series, I actually watched through the whole anime and my advice to everyone, who wants to get on BlazBlue train - do NOT watch the anime until you are really familiard with the story. And even after that, do that cautiosly.

Anime was a disaster, especially when they decided to cramp all CT story into two episodes.

No, not really. If he wants to know proper backstory of anyone else than the main guys from CT then he might be pretty lost starting from CS.

Not really, as someone who started on Continuum Shift.

Hakumen has no proper build up or explanation to him as CS assumes you already know his stuff from CT. Some relationships like Tao, Bang and Carl come out of nowhere, Nu-13 has no proper character established that allows us to understand her point of view. There is stuff missing if you skip CT.

Nu-13 is sorta dead in Continuum Shift, so that doesnt matter.

Except that she comes back anyways by Story shenanigans in CP.
