Beta patch question

I keep seeing stuff on these forums that at a certain point in the game, you need to install the beta patch because of a bug that makes the game CTD at that point, leaving you unable to progress. I'm still really close to the beginning of the game, but I want to have some knowledge beforehand.

1. How do I install the beta patch?

2. Once I've gotten past that point, can I uninstall the beta patch without it affecting my game and/or my system, and how is that accomplished?

Right-click the game in your library and go to "Properties" at the bottom of the menu.
There should be a "beta" tab, go there.
Select "publicbeta - Update Test Branch" in the drop-down menu.

To opt out of the beta (no real reason to do so, but you asked), repeat those steps but select "NONE" in the beta tab instead.

If you don't want to install the beta patch, you simply need to go out and do other things until Death gains a level (the crash occurs if the XP you get from talking to a certain character causes you to level up).

But yes, it's safe to install the patch, go through that cutscene, then uninstall it. You can also just install the beta patch now if you want (it has a bunch of additional fixes over the release build, with the caveat that it may negatively impact performance—but there's no harm in trying it out for a bit).

How do I know if the Beta patch has installed or not? I followed your directions, but I don't think it actually installed.

You really don't have to download the beta patch to get through the crash. For all the issues with the game, check solutions in my review.
