I also think that the comments over the cutscenes are really annoying, and it's not only during the intro. I really like comments, but they should be after the scene, not during the scene. We can't enjoy the music, we lose some pieces of dialog, that's poorly implemented.
Also, I think it'd be nice if we could know easily when a comment has been already played (different colour ? greyed out ?). As the game always makes us go back and forth and at different times, I played the same comments over and over…
Other than that, this remaster is awesome. But the comments system bothered me a bit.
Also, why would you play the game for the first time with the commentary on?) You ruin the game for yourself.
Because playing an adventure game twice in a row is a lot more painful (and absolutely deprived of fun) than watching a movie twice in a row with comments. Because actually, a movie lasts 1:30 to 3 hours. My playtime of that game was… hmm… about 10 hours I'd say, spread over a couple of days. Well, another 10 hours (or let's say 5 because I remember all the puzzles now) just for a few commentaries (because there aren't that many, in fact), it's not worth it. I'm not doing "speedruns", I don't host a Twitch channel.
Have you played Grim Fandango Remastered ? Well, you got the comments (and a lot more) before, after, when you're not trying to focus on the art, the ambiance, the music or the scenario. It doesn't ruin the game at all. I guess that's because Grim Fandango's comments were done in the right way, and from the same company with the same intentions that I'm surprised they didn't totally nailed it this time.
However, if it's how you like it, that's cool
It should take around two hours if you know how to solve the puzzles.
Grim Fandango totally succeeded at doing this, though it had so many cutscenes and so many more commentaries in it. I don't understand what's hard to get in what I'm saying.
But thank you very much for your advice, although you probably understand that if I'm talking about it now, it's because I've already played the game and already experienced the unpleasant surprise of those very few comments. And I don't plan to play it again soon, because it's an adventure game so it should be played only a couple of times per decade (at least for me).
It's still an awesome game, and an awesome remaster. DoubleFine did an awesome job and I'm very thankful. But the commentaries were more cleverly implemented in Grim Fandango Remastered, and it's surprising to see that step back in that "new" game.
playing a point&click adventure game for the first time with commentary is like watching a movie the first time with commentary, no matter the runtime... you won't ever be able to focus completely on the game, let alone think what u should do next. As morningmountain said, the second time only takes around 2 hours. THATS when new players should activate it.
The commentary isn't only implemented for fans/people who completed the game, but you cant complain that it distracts you from the game, as this is what a commentary from a developer/director does!
No, it wasn’t the first time I played Day of the Tentacle, nor Grim Fandango.
And a few months earlier, I played Grim Fandango Remastered, with the commentaries on, and it was a wonderful experience.
I just loved it.
The game is still awesome, the comments were giving many interesting information and funny ones too.
That was wonderful, and it never overlapped the dialogues.
So I played Day of the Tentacle Remastered the same way.
But this time, it overlapped the dialogues.
You think it’s better?
Well, I don’t.
And even if I know these games, I still like to see the cutscenes the way I’m supposed to see them, hear the dialogues the way I’m supposed to hear them.
Here, we have a big advantage compared to a movie, because the comparison is actually pretty lame.
In a movie, you have a pace that you can’t really interrupt. When it comes to an adventure game, you have plenty of slowdowns, actually that genre is all about observing a place, trying to figure out what you should do. So you can interrupt the pace anytime, which is perfect to include commentaries, exactly how the commentaries of Grim Fandango Remastered were, and almost all the comments of Day of the Tentacle Remastered are.

Please now, try to imagine that you are not the centre of the world, and your way to enjoy a media isn’t the only way to enjoy a media.

Even for people who played the game before.
Even for people, like me, who are used to enjoy commentaries on their movies, documentaries on their movies.
Because it’s just not the same media.
I did play Day of the Tentacle Remastered for the first time, obviously !!!
But it wasn’t the first time I was playing Day of the Tentacle, and my last run was a few years ago. So, I wanted to enjoy the game, in addition to its new graphics, to its new music, to its uncompressed voice, and in addition to interesting commentaries, EXACTLY LIKE I DID FOR GRIM FANDANGO REMASTERED A FEW MONTHS AGO.
I’m not going to speedrun the game with no sound just to hear the few comments scattered here and there and overlapping the three cutscenes of the game.
It sounds so ridiculous (but if it's how you enjoy an adventure game, that's cool).
I stop here because I’ve been repeating the same thing over and over, and it’s so obvious that I really feel like wasting my time, and except you two, I don’t see who can’t understand.
You're free to do what you want, big boy. But dont complain afterwards, when it goes wrong!
Common sense should tell you otherwise though...
