So can you switch between characters?

In the controllers it says 1,2,3 switches between the three characters but so far they don't really do anything when I press them. I just started the game and I'm playing as Bernard...do you have to get past a certain point in the story first?

I already went through the time machine in the intro.

From memory, I think you might have to play a little bit more as Bernard before you can start playing as Hoagie.

Then you have to solve a puzzle to be able to play as Laverne.

You have to unlock them one by one. In order to use Hoagie, you need to find thebattery plans, as Prof. Ed said to Bernard in the introduction. In order to control Laverne, you need to do something with Hoagie. You unlock them one by one.
