Why was there never Maniac Mansion 3?

Just curious, why was there never a Maniac Mansion 3 or Day Of The Tentacle 2? I assume at some point someone commented as to why but I can't find any info on it.

I think Lucas games got bought up by Disney and they are just sitting on it...doing nothing :(

Give it back to Ron Gilbert and Tim Schafer and let them work their magic!

There is a fan-made sequel to Day of the Tentacle. It is fairly fun to play and kudos to the developer team, but it takes a little more than just four guys to bring back the real magic.

Last year Microsoft acquired Double Fine, so I do not expect Tim Schafer to get back to DoTT franchise anytime soon. Pity.

There is a lot of the Maniac Mansion vibe, locations and chracters in Thimbleweed Park tho. If not a direct sequel, it is still somewhat close to the formula, features the Mansion Mansion and obviously the gameplay and quirky humour, and then some.
