always loads at beginning of level. why?

After about 10 minutes of gameplay progressing through level 1, I will save the game, and then close out the game exiting to the main menu. and then I will load the game from my save point. The loading screen appears and then the game starts me at the very beginning of the level instead of at my loaded save point. Is anyone else experiencing this problem? Do they have automatic load points further on in the level?

If I remember correctly, due to the save behaviour, loading a save whilst in-game will load you at the point you saved, but closing and re-opening the game and loading it will start you at the start of the level you saved on, even though it does save your items and XP.
