Not even a day in and they've already indulged the bad faith argument, that we do not deserve better compensation because we can just keep playing Smite "1"

Until they shut it down and or just don't support it anymore and "suddenly" it has technical issues and will be unplayable. Not that stuff like this happens all the time with other games right? Like CoD infinite warfare mp etc.

How is splitting the player base good in their eyes is beyond me. And as you said, its only a matter of time till they kill the first game in order for people to migrate to the second. especially that they don't have their skins or gods, so you have to pay again.

Doesnt even need to be.
Their FAQ says Smite "1" will be SUPPORTED for the foreseeable future.
But this is just like the time between Overwatch's content drought and Overwatch 2 release.
It's dead air. With no new content it's gonna die on it's own eventually, no matter how much they "support" it.
And if porting Skins is so hard, I doubt that they will deliver content in paralelle.
They are 100% banking on people just leaving the game, so they can say it's not worth supporting anymore because only 10 people still play and those 10 are in 3 different queues.

It's just simple (video game) economics. Not one game that has a sequel has ever held a significant enough playerbase in the original to justify supporting and maintaining it with content. That is apart from most games that have a sequel also being significantly different. But this is just "Smite but new engine". It's not "Smite but Fighting Game" or "Smite but Card Game" or "Smite but suddenly you have a campaign" it's "Smite with Assets optimized for Unreal 5"

So in the end, what they expect me to do, is look at the exact same game with better graphics, that is getting consistent support and new content but that was only made to exploit me, and play a game that will become abandoned within at most 1 year of SMite 2's release? No thanks.

I rather not play Smite at all, than let you talk down to me as if it was wrong for me to be upset about this.

I just looked at the article and I find some things hilarious.

For one, that even the article puts "generous" in quotes, because even they dont believe it, they just quote the dude they interviewed.

Also this part:
"The one thing that players are going to care the most about is that you'll be able to see your SMITE 1 God mastery level on the stars in SMITE 2. You can still show off that you were a baller in SMITE 1, that you were an 8-star Athena, for example," Cantatore added.

I dont think this is what players are going to care about most.
For one, because not all gods will be in the new game.
There is no showing that I was "a baller" on a god that doesnt exist anymore.
And secondly:
No the thing people care most about, is that they didnt flush money down the drain by believing you'd do everything you can to preserve the value they invested in, instead of all that money being converted to GLORIFIED COUPONS.

Wait wait wait, I didnt know there was more to it:

"We really want to make sure people hopefully feel respected for their time and money and their achievements, no matter what level of player you are. In the most recent rounds we did with our NDA creators and Olympians, they were like, 'Guys, this is awesome,' so hopefully, we get that reaction on Friday.

Expectations:
"Guys this is awesome!"
Reality:
"If they dont change this ♥♥♥♥, I will stop playing"

If they arent afraid of players actually speaking out why did they have to sigh an NDA to begin with? They knew this would blow up in their face.

What i also don't really understand is always the "reasoning" i hear from people that the Engine update basically makes it not worth porting or remaking assets or changing the current ones to work in UE5. Like there have been example of games in the past that used UE3 and changed to UE4 and remade pretty much everything and or ported it for example Blade and Soul. And there it wasn't an issue too and it was a whole MMORPG that got completely remade basically. That is no excuse to me.

It's their ambition.
I have no way to verify their claims about how much time it takes, but the porting goes beyond "export model" - "import model"
They want to update Textures, Animation, FX, and since some gods apparently also change, I guess their abilities change, they would need entirely new animations.

And even just making it so all these parts line up in the new engine aparently is 2 months per skin (which, again, I cant verify) and they then claim that this doesnt account for improving the skin so it visually fits what they already have.

I cant judge that. I really cant. But I can believe that porting 1600+ skins is probably a lot of work (again, the Migration doc for Unreal 5 never references compatibility to Unreal 3 only to 4, so at the very least I assume if they wanted to migrate their assets to Unreal 5, I guess they have to migrate to 4 first and then to 5? I aint a developer)

Anyway, my point isnt "I dont believe that this will be as much work as they claim it will be!"
My point is:
If you cant/dont want to do that, then dont make a sequel.

Their delusion is, that they have to bring Smite into modern technology and such, and that this is unavoidable to improve smite at all.
And because it is unavoidable to do, and the effort to port everything is too much, they decided to just not do it.

I enjoy Smite in it's current form.
I know a lot of people dont.
I dont know if their issues could be solved in Unreal 3.
But I know that no matter how you look at it, it's bad.

I would understand not porting every skin.
But if I cant have the skins I bought in the de-facto replacement for this game, then at the very least I want more compensation than a coupon.

And that's the point.
Either compensate us properly, or port all the skins.
And if you cant do the second one because of the effort involved, then either dont do a sequel, or give us something more to work with.

How delusional they are about the quality of the compensation is in that interview when the dude said "We hope people say "This is amazing" when we tell them this"

i agree with this guy,
What i would also say is if its so time consuming then hire another x amount of artists/developers whatever that position is. So they can make the time needed for importing much less. Its a make or break situation this game created them and made them succesful so its only logical its the one that takes them down.

What kills me is Gems have no REAL value outside of the game. They could easily just give you the gems you spent back to use on the new game to unlock ya know everything you paid for.

From the FAQ:

WILL THERE BE AN ULTIMATE GOD PACK FOR SMITE 2?

Players can unlock all present and future SMITE 2 gods by purchasing a SMITE 2 Founder’s Pack. We’ll have more details to share about our Founder’s Packs soon.

Which a lot of people, like me, have interpreted to mean:
"Have fun rebuying the Ultimate God Pack"

I mean, I want to support Smite, but this is an absolute ripoff and about to turn into a massive PR failure. People (like me) have spent hundreds or even thousands of dollars on skins and voicepacks. For HiRez to negate those is going to hurt the company massively, because it is essentially damaging the people who support them with their wallets.

What looney toon marketing person or CFO thought it was a great idea to alienate the customer base by screwing us over?
That person should be fired. This isn't hard -- this is marketing 101. Don't mess with your paying customers.

Man this keeps getting better and better, basically having to rebuy the whole of smite. And i bet the founder pack will be like 100 euro or some ♥♥♥♥. I remeber buying it back in the day, was like 20 euro.

I am with you. Exactly on the same boat. I spent loads and i am going nowhere if this is actually how they are gonna release it. Whats funny is that they keep pumping out new skins still on smite i saw this legacy pass that came out this weekend and more events. Whats the point if i will not have them over?

Yep i mean i play it quite alot on ps4 and it's quite disheartening to see what they are doing. I for my part decided to play Smite "1" until they shut it down or it has "sudden" technical issues and can't play it anymore so that everyone "better" migrates to "2" due to them not supporting it anymore.

We cant let this get to us, lets start looking for replacements xD Nah but for real isnt there a way to show them how against this we are ? it takes you 250 years as they say for the skins to be ported over which is BS obviously. Then my guy hire as many people as it requires to lower that amount and make it doable. They have always been cutting corners and have always been making crazy money. Their excuses are just meh.
