It's been going on and off for a bunch of years, but season 10 really took a big hit to the numbers. People just don't want to deal with all those new mechanics they constantly put in the game, it makes it snowball faster and faster. Also big patches every few months which completely changes builds again and again, it's like constantly doing homework for something which is supposed to be fun.
Smite used to be a game you could easily get into, yeah it's no longer that. Over 120 gods, each 4 abilities, thousands of skins, most with new sound cues, broken matchmaking, people throwing the game if a jungler doesn't become level 3 before the 1 minute mark because he missed 1 mob, it's completely mental.
I got into it to have fun, then i did homework so i could be better, then i needed to do weekly homework while i'm constantly getting teamed up with people with 1 digit IQ's insulting me for not helping them in their lane while i just helped another lane kill someone literally 3 seconds prior, game after game after game. I wondered why i even bothered, the game just started to piss me off the moment i saw that Hi-Rez logo pop up, so i stopped playing and i've been doing a lot better mentally. This game is draining, don't get into it, there are better games around. I keep up with some free events, staying with arena matches to complete stuff, haven't gotten a battlepass for like 6 months now.
Smite definitely isn't going to grow, they have already missed their chance and probably will never have a scene in other regions like Asia. Getting into the game is just like any other MOBA, there's a learning curve, no different than League or Dota, if you're not prepared to meet the curve then the game isn't for you.
Just like any MOBA people will be toxic to new players, you'll have a much better experience if you mute everyone at the start of the game and just focus on your own play.
The player count has literally stayed the same for like 3-4 years. Possibly even an increase since season 9. It's still at the exact same level of popularity.
As long as Smite maintains its pro league, it'll likely continue to stay at the same level.
Smite has a pretty high learning curve, and it always has. So if you have issues with dying a lot and potential toxicity: you won't last long.
It's a great game if you enjoy high skill / high reward PvP games.
I'm thinking they are probably just part of the very toxic side of the community that hates new players and don't want noobs popping in to "ruin" their games. This will be your main deterrent to entry with smite. Like some of the others have said, the very worst and most idiotic players will always be the ones to start talking ♥♥♥♥ or saying you suck while they feed 0-12. People just like trolling I guess. I think a lot of people just take it way too seriously or something and start raging over bs. Don't pick it up if you're one of those new generation delicate flowers who can't handle "cyber bullying" (which to me, personally, is just a hilarious concept).
My bigger gripe is that there actually does seem to be a ton of new players these days, while most of the vets have ostensibly moved on, and the matchmaking is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ retarded, so in a fair amount of matches many people just have no idea what they're doing at all which is really frustrating. Then, again, these will be the players trying to tell everyone how to play. It'll roll your eyes pretty hard at a certain point, but if you're mature it's mostly worth a good laugh.
As others have also suggested, I tend not to interact with randos in game much. That said, there are plenty of decent people floating around too who don't ♥♥♥♥♥ and moan or rage quit, etc. Had a lot of good laughs with self aware people making dumb plays and immediately being like "I'm the greatest, cancel that." had a guy use his team grab ability, whiff on everyone, grab nothing, utterly fail, and then type in chat "nailed it. -_-" so it's about as toxic as any other community really; about 50/50.
There is quite a lot to learn, but if you enjoy cerebral games (as opposed to mindless ♥♥♥♥ like cod) that take some multitasking I'd say pick it up. If you've got nobody to roll with you can play with me, I usually hit a few matches like every other day or so, be glad to give you a bit of training. At the end of the day the game is free so it's not like it's gonna hurt to try it out.
P.s. Don't expect balance, it will never come. Some gods are literally godly, and others beg the question of why they're even in the game. hi-rez has no clue what works or why. Also, stay out of conquest; the matches are waaayyy too long and it's the gamemode where the trolls and crybabies congregate most. Starting out, stick with Arena and maybe joust (wahmbulance rolls through joust quite a bit too though), then graduate to assault once you're feeling confident you understand the basics. Maybe someday we'll get good 'ol clash (jump city!) back, but I doubt it.
Not growing
Like a number of games, it just survives but in a stagnant state with a portion of players rotating, as one leaves a new person joins.
Some people say it is dying due to wishful thinking.
Smite 2 is not guaranteed success, I used to think that but look what happened with Overwatch 2 and some other sequels.
let's play then xD
Most negative opinions are from jaded long time players. (I've also played since release (beta actually) but I still definitely find it fun.)
