Again, there is no straight answer to that. To get a general idea I suggest looking at sites like smite.guru Check out the leaderboards and top esports players. See what gods they play, look at their builds and check out any that may stream or post to youtube or twitch.
Where do you normally play and who have you been using so far. The gods are pretty balanced so finding one more in line with your playstyle is more important IMO.
Mages would be Nox, Chronos, Isis and Hel

in terms of staying behind and doing craptons of dmg; scylla, kukulkan and ah puch. all the other mages require some sort of maintenance in close range and/or use of auto attacks.
