Aah its possible that this is what it was. I have since deleted Smite and that software when I found out of its existence after I had Exited the game and found it to still be running and using CPU and RAM resources even though the game isn't running so I consider this garbage malware/spyware.
Not only it being a possible anti hack but it specifically said it was scanning my PC to boost performance, to me this is as bad as spyware and malware I don't want this garbage to alter any files to boost any performance for me I have my PC clean the way i want it thank you very much!!
So off hand I cannot recall exactly what it was but yes I believe it could be the Anti hack. It can be found in a Hirez folder in all programs.
While my ESET Smart Security did NOT pick it up as anything harmful. I do not want any software scanning files on my PC after I have deleted the game and most importantly not a software that has anti uninstallation measures built in.
I find this sketchy. Not only that, this particular piece of software was using 48MB of RAM, this isn't like punkbuster or battleeye that uses a fraction of the resources to run and actually exits when you exit battlefield or dayz
It comes with the game, that's how the devs keep the game updated and fight cheaters.
You don't like it, fine, but don't panic, don't panic.
This is what it was. Thanks for pointing it out.
It behaved very suspicious, there is no reason for it to continue running after you have exited smite or hell there is no reason for it to exist after you have DELETED smite from your steam library.
I consider this spyware since they insist on keeping this software running and scanning your PC after you have DELETED the game. They have NO business scanning the files on my PC AFTER I DELETED SMITE.
And furthermore the Anti Uninstallation features built in to make deleting this garbage difficult has turned me away from this company.
Only problem is it runs when you aren't playing Smite which is very fishy and suspicious. Why do they care what I do when I am not playing their game.
I agree with you that this and many other games should run a tight ship when it comes to interacting with their customer's machines. Microsoft is not setting a great example at the moment though, so let us not hold our collective breath.
If you could also provide us where you saw information about it being a tool to 'boost fps'. The tool itself is used for updating, authenticating, and anti-cheat detection for SMITE so I am not sure where the boost FPS came from.
Sir it goes a step ABOVE that in fishy and suspicious.
It runs and scans your PC even AFTER you have DELETED Smite. And it has anti uninstallation features to make it difficult to delete. It behaves exactly like those malware you get from free software on downloadforge websites etc perhaps its harmless but there is no reason it should behave so suspicions and fishy
You won't be missed.
It is possible I could have been wrong about the "boost fps" part or I saw wrong, I will take your word for it that it does not have this.
I did not pay much attention to it since I did get angry when I saw how fishy it looked and how it behaved, kept running even after the game was exited and DELETED.
Maybe you all mean no harm, but seriously you guys have to look into that software. It does NOT behave very normal at all. No reason for it to continue to run after you exited or deleted the game, it gives the impression of a malware that you get from those sites like sourceforge etc when downloading free programs
Really not that uncommon for a smaller online game to have a service like that that stays open in the background till it's needed for patching. Should note that it won't do anything without the launcher open. I'm fairly certain this is what you were seeing, if it was the authenticate and update service, not sure why that was running without the game running on your end.
And I'm not sure why it would stay on your system after uninstalling the game, only thing I can think of is something got messed up on your end that caused things to not be removed properly (something prevented the uninstaller from killing services which would prevent them from being uninstalled).
Honestly I wouldn't worry, this is a fairly normal thing these days. Is it something I'm super keen on? Not really, but I mean, even Apple has stuff that runs even if iTunes isn't running. Main reason is keeping a small component of a program in memory helps improve program startup times, as part of the program is already in RAM. Less to load in from the (usually mechanical and thus slow by comparison) hard drive.
