If you are playing a mode where you can farm minions, most Mages do Warlock's Sash as the 1st or 2nd item so they can stack Magic Power and Health. Another popular alternative stacking item is Book of Thoth for stacking mana, then converting mana into Magic Power.
Another popular damage item is Soul Reaver, because it does 15% of their max health in additional damage when you hit with your abilities, but that doesn't add a lot of damage if they aren't building health.
For lifesteal, Bancroft's Talon and Pythagorem's Piece are popular; Bancroft's if you don't have any magical allies and/or want a big boost in power as you lose health in a fight, Pythagorem's if you do have Magical teammates so you can share with the aura.
If you need CDR, there's Chronos Pendant (plus Mail of Renewal for sustain after teamfights).
If you want a slow on your abilities, there's Gem of Isolation.
And if you just want even more Magic Penetration, there's also Obsidian Shard.
If you are playing a more basic attack focused Mage like Sol, Chronos, or even Zeus then Polynomicon and Demonic Grip are great options for damage and pen on your basic attacks too.
So yeah, like ParkerWarrior said, there are way too many Mages with way too many playstyles to give just a standard build, but there are all your major options. And don't neglect some kind of defense either, like Mail of Renewal or Hide of the Urchin, things like that. You can't keep your DPS up if you keep dying. ;-)
Even then a lot of items are situational depending on the gods in the enemy team, so you can't really just stick to one build you have to adapt.
Shoes of Focus>Warlocks Sash>Chronos Amulet>Rod of Tahuti>Spear of Magus>Gem of Isolation.
Once you figure out where the mage is lacking , you can start replacing items.
Some mages like Zeus and Sol can benefit from attack speed/pen buffs. But if you hang back and play burst damage the above build is decent all around place to start.
The last 3 items you can build in any order. So if you need some CC to stop getting ganked, build Gem of Isolation 4th...if you need more pen, then spear of the magus 4th etc.
Checking builds will help, but it is really up to your playstyle.
You can build just like someone else and have it be a useless build if it doesn't compliment your playstyle. For example, build A is for someone who uses auto attacks alot , and you play back and never land auto attacks...so build A may not be for you.
