Then the assassins are playing poorly. Either that or it is a really good player playing Neith.
Thanatos has an a heal in his 1 - which also does a lot of damage early and late game (assuming your early game went well). He has a silence - not hard CC, but still very effective if used well. His ult stuns, so using it to initiate rather than execute is preferable in many situations.
Thor's 1 doesn't do as much damage, and is harder to do the extra damage unless you stun first - not always going to happen depending on the enemy player, and it uses 2 abilites to confirm it (Thanatos only needs the 1 ability to do the full damage). He has hard CC which also acts as a wall, and his 3 does constant damage if the enemy stays in range. His ult also stuns, but no execute.
Saying that Thor is better at building bruiser is pointless, that is what he is made for. Just look at his passive. Thanatos is for securing kills - even those in and behind towers with his ult. He is good at ganking with his silence, and his 1. His 2 is good for chasing and the penetration it gives. I would say they are both great at what they do, as long as the player can play them well enough. Thanatos doesn't really need to be squishy, but works better whilst building damage over defence since he shouldn't be in the middle of the fights.
