Basically, you build the items that help you counter the gods that you're playing against and what they're building. Divine Ruin if you're playing against Hel for example.
It all depends on HOW you want to build your god. It depends on the context of each individual match.
For starters, memorize what all the items do. And then after that build the items that will be most helpful in your current match up.
As a Ra, you're gonna want cooldown, pen and power and maybe a little bit of armor, generally.
If you aren't planning ahead for a build (using the God Builder tool for instance), it's usually fine to go with the recommended or popular items actually in the store itself, though those don't always help with build order and obviously give no explanation for what is useful in certain situations... That's where YouTube or Steam guides can be helpful.
I also highly recommend just asking on these discussion forums as there are plenty of us who will give their opinions and argue out pros and cons for you and you can just glean the results.
I do suggest you read a couple guides too on whichever character you are playing to learn combos and roles etc. at Smitefire.
