New to Smite and need to ask
My friend and I just started 4 or 5 days ago, I'm from Canada and the prices of things are in USD.

I am wondering if the business model of this company is to actually charge about $10 CAD to get a random skin out of a box? Like, I can't just pick the one that I want and pay $10?

I feel like I have to be missing something, I've been enjoying the game but similar games, League, DotA2 and HOTS all have a more reasonable business model, buy what you want, etc.

As I said, I feel like I have to be missing something here?

You can click on the god you want and choose a skin to buy. Some are locked and you will need to open chests to have them (or sales idk).
I think voice > skin, so if you want to buy something you should first focus on the voice.

Which skin do you want to buy ?

Yes, loot boxes are unfortunately a thing in this game.
I don't know how many of those skins are also directly purchasable. I recall reading that they wanted to allow more direct purchasing, but I've not seen much evidence of it since.

As LeBub said, voice packs are better whilst loot boxes are a thing.
1 good thing about them though, is that there are no duplicates other than the various boosters you can get from them. So no duplicate skins, emotes, or voice packs, unlike some other games.

yaaa noo noo noo just 1000boxes and 90-99%(reaching like 30-hundreds of junk you wont even ever look at or use or matter or tiny hidden junk booster) of each box being anything but decent skins SOOOooo much better then other games typically 1-3loot box with skins you dont want and duplicates that pay you eventually to get a skin or w/e SOOOooo much better.... :steamfacepalm:

not to say there are not games that do it worse but there are certaintly Many that do it way better; they just changed the scam to trick people with low iq / dumb guards not improved it.

I just don't really understand, last night I saw a skin I wanted and it was really cool, before I got it I looked through and saw another skin that I really even more (Only from boxes) - I ended up not getting the skin I wanted because I was a little annoyed that the skin I actually wanted I couldn't buy it.

To be clear, I don't mean exclusive event skins, every game has that and although I don't like it, I understand it. But to spend $10 to buy a box and have a what? 1/755 chance of getting it from some underworld box? That is literal ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ insanity.

So not only did I not get the skin that I did want, but it was almost like they talked themselves out of a sale on even more stuff.

I really thought I had to be missing something there but I guess not :lunar2020thinkingtiger:

Yep, that is the SMITE monetization model. Scummy. But it was way worse last year, where they threw literally every single new skin in lootboxes.

Just a result of whales and slowly dwindling population. No excuses for it though.

But that is what I mean, my other friend joined us just tonight and he litearlly saw that and said "♥♥♥♥ this ♥♥♥♥". How do you attract new people to buy product if you make it so scummy? I buy stuff because I want to support the game I play. Sure, I'll play and enjoy the free game but I am not investing $10 a loot box to get a skin lol.
Dont get the chests you'll eventually get alot of skins from chests as rewards and the like. Ive bought a few adventure bundles and Battlepass/Seasons over the years and ive got about 300+ skins so far. Eventually most skins are stuck into the free reward chests so eventually you can accumulate a large number of them for free, just takes time and luck with the RNG (I suggest using your Favor ingame to buy emotes for gods or avatars since the more of them you own the more you trim the fat from the various chests you can get for free meaning you get the skins more often).

Also you have to buy gems to buy things in the game, and when buying gems the game will use Steams interface to buy them so the prices will be converted into your countries currency thanks to Steam.

I didn't say it was better than other games. Just that unlike other games you don't get duplicates.

It's still a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ practice, and is recognised as gambling in various places.

It is gambling lol, and for sure it is ♥♥♥♥, I'd love to see them fix it. Good games get ruined by bad business models.

what don't you understand ??
Some people have litteraly payed 10,000+$ do you know how many customers it would take to spend that much especially if you take into account many of them wouldn't spend 1$ ?
Kind of why loot boxes and the like blew up to be massive and why Smite became more scummy.

(no joke or sarcasm there are people that have spent 10k on Smite ... they get addicted to spending and feel the need to get every new skin and every new skin therefore is thrown in a chest of 100+trash so they will have to buy a ton unless they godly lucky but chances are they least will have to buy 10 at max least and this is to those that own everything from non-stop buying those that rarely buy likely will have to buy 50+).

Because those business models spark anger from the community and don't often last. So no, I don't understand why it's a business model for a game they want to keep around for awhile. :cozybethesda:

I think you're quotes broke there.

I only say it's recognised as gambling in most places, because there are quite a few that don't see it as that legally.

They used to have all skins direct purchase but not anymore. And chests have actually got better to my knowledge when chests first came out they pretty much crammed whatever garbage they could in there. Now chest actually have themes with skins you might actually want and not have to roll through 100+ items. They also have some of the skin chests for direct purchase but for a premium.

They didn't have those two things for years so it's better now but still scummy as hell. My advice is don't buy skins for a god unless you like they and actually do well with the god otherwise the skin will just collect dust. And I believe they do have a sale where gems price is less and they make alot of non direct purchase limited time skins buyable for direct purchase but still at a premium.
