Did Merc's 1 really deserve that nerf?
So I get that golden bow x Mercury was a huge issue and made him way too strong in the meta but why is the logic to nerf Mercury and not the item or his interaction with said item? I've only just recently started playing him again and his new 1 just feels so underwhelming and not being able to crit on it makes it kinda lame honestly. Something needed nerfing yeah, but not like this.

Because they tried to nerf the item before, and they ended up removing it (Golden Bow).
Mercury seems to be the main god that causes this to be broken more than other gods.

You can still crit on his 1, just not apply item effects.

Ah yeah it's golden blade now isn't it. I can't say I noticed it crit-ing at all though, even with a couple of crit items.

Well, patch notes say that it should still crit. So, go into jungle practice to test with 100% crit chance, if it's still not critting, report it as a bug on their forums (link is in the pinned Bug Reporting thread).

It does apply item effects, it's just ability triggered effects rather than basic attack triggered effects now

It does apply item effects, it's just ability triggered effects rather than basic attack triggered effects now

Sorry, yes, that's what I meant. Things like Crusher (that apply on ability hits) will still apply, but not effects from items like Frostbound Hammer (that apply on basic attacks).
