It would split the playerbase.
It would take resources to do so, which are already stretched with the other projects they have.
Why not just update this game?
I would say, no, they almost certainly won't. And if they did, it wouldn't be any time soon. The only way I see it happening is if some amazing new technology becomes available for game developers to use that would vastly improve the experience.
What do the customers get by leaving Smite 1, to play Smite 2 instread?
What happens to their profile, and all the money spent in Smite 1? WIll it carry over? Or just start from scratch? In which case, see previous questions.
By splitting the playerbase, I mean, if people play Smite 2, which is meant to be an improvment, what entices them to leave the first game with all their skins, gods, xp levels etc?
Graphics changes don't need a new game. They have changed maps quite a few times in the past. There is no reason to change the layout and looks more than once per season - at least for the competetive ones. And again, why do this in a new game anyway? Why not just change this in Smite 1? Same goes for your balance argument.
And again, unless there is some amazing new technology that requires them to start over, why make a Smite 2 in the first place?
I'm asking you these questions so that you actually think it through, and maybe come up with a reasonable argument for doing it. The 2 reasons you gave don't need a new game at all. They can all be done in this game.
MOBA's don't need sequals, and we don't count DOTA 2, because the original was just a mod. They don't really need to update the graphics, because Hi-Rez isn't going to make it look like Paragon, they will keep it their style. If the graphics were to be for some reason updated, this will put more stress on older hardware and alienate players with weaker PCs (Though this depends on how far they would go with graphics if decided). SMITE is an E-sports game, and they want as many people to play as possible, so being on UE3 and having less demanding graphics, it allows more people to play, that isn't to say that UE4 can't be less demanding either, but will limit its capabilities with older PCs. Smacking a "2" next to SMITE wouldn't do anything but look... New? What are they going to do? Add new Gods? Wait they're already doing that. They update the game and "balance" it every 2 weeks.
I wouldn't mind seeing SMITE on a modern engine, but I don't think Hi-Rez has the resources and time to do so, and Recalled Dead has made some legitimate points.
Ok, so;
- Making a new game, Smite 2, will not make current players swap over just because "GRAPHICS YAY!" It doesn't work like that. You might have a lot of the current players check it out. But I doubt they'd stick around.
- Smite 2 would likely not adopt the Smite 1 playerbase (see above), which is why I am asking you to think of why you would need to do a sequel. You need something to bring them over, and make them stay.
- If you say it's only for players that tried it out and left, why would they try it out again (you even said, they wouldn't even know/care about the sequel)? What would make them stay if they did?
- Steam news isn't going to cut it. Not for the amount of work needed to make a new game that is similar. HiRez isn't a giant company, they do have limited resources, which means stopping development on Smite 1 - bad idea. Currrent playerbase would get very annoyed at this, and likely wouldn't even touch another HiRez game for a while, let alone play a similar one with better graphics being the only real draw.
If it's the same with just some better graphics and improvements;
Why make a new game?
Why not just update this one?
Why not keep the current playerbase, continue to make money on it, and just improve Smite 1?
You are comparing Smite to PUBG. Very different games, with very different experiences.
The graphics for Smite are not bad, and they aren't even taht bad at lower settings. But as has already been mentioned, players often lower them to see things easier during fights.
And again (!) why would a new game be needed for this, It takes resources away from a company which might not be able to afford the risk purely for the graphics.
Stop repeating this same point, as it is not a good argument. If you can come up with an actualy reason why a sequel should be made, and why it would be worth the time, then do so. Otherwise, you are just saying the same thing over and over.
So, before posting again, think about the following;
- What would make the risk worth it for HiRez?
- What would make the current playerbase swap over to play the sequel?
- What purpose would a sequel serve, that they can't do with the current game?
If the only thing changing is the graphics, no one from the current player base is going to swap over, unless they get all of their skins etc in the new game (and improving graphics can already be done in the current one).
If that happens though, HiRez makes no money from the current playerbase, so they would likely have to sell the game, rather than make it F2P.
Which then means new players are less likely to just try it out.
And older players who didn't like it won't come back (because the only difference is graphics).
I've got a decent PC, and would still rather play Smite than most games that are out. Better graphics or not. People who play games purely for the graphics aren't likely to stick around for a MOBA anyway.
Lol Smite is best looking moba after paragon.
Try high res texture pack and 200% resolution scale.
I could *almost* argue Paladins is Smite 2 already. It just doesn't have some of the features that make a MOBA what it is. If it wasn't so much like Overwatch, I'd play Paladins instead.
