Are protection worth it ?
In most of my games I almost never buy protections, since I don`t see them making a difference. In 3v3 for example, people don`t even buy penetration, even tho I might have 2 defence items, they will still kill me fairly fast with just boots, trans, attacker`s and crusher.
So, are protections worth it ? I think they aren`t ... since you can`t have a lot of hp to make prots help because the % damage items are waaaay too good , no one evens builds mistical or midgardian or whatever anymore , only breastplate and sometimes hide.
How do you guys build the tanks in 3v3 ? Need sum help

The answer is more complicated than your initial question. It's situational and dynamic over time. Explaining all the details would create post with a volume of 2 pages A4.

Check ingame god builder across levels for starters. Consider crossbuilds. Watch others building.

Mystical doesn't give you a lot, though it can be good for brawler type characters (mostly warriors that want to be close). Seems more relevant in solo lane from what I've seen.

Midgardian is situational. Only really worth getting if an AA god is doing very well, or they have stacked attack speed gods (multiple hunters, AA assassins/warriors etc).

Otherwise, as Roofcat said, it's too situational to give specific builds that will always be relevant. I would generally build defence as a tank though.

the thing is that protections are most useful to guardians to avoid getting bursted down in 1 go. as a guardian your role isn't to actualy fight but to be as annoying as you can while helping your team survive. late game you can get shreded fast but at the same time you will not get blown up by everything.

for any other class other than warrior protections aren't worth it unless you absolutely need some survivability.

now for the items, i almost never build mystical or midgardian. the only times i do is when a) midgardian - when they have an annoying hunter or multiple aa gods and i will almost always pair it with witchblade. if i have kumbhakarna i will almost always build these items but it also depends on the situation. b) mystical - when i'm ahead but i also need some hp. also do not underestimate the damage it can do when you are brawling, it could surprise you. for this tho it depends on what gods they have, if they have invisibles i will most likely build it, if i'm ahead and playing a god with good mobility/survivability it's also likely that i will build it.

other tanky items to really keep an eye out are mantle of discord and spirit robe, both are fantastic for surviving and you gain some really useful effects too.

i can't actualy tell you when you should be building them or what items excactly, you will start to understand what you need most in what situation the more you play. i will also guess that you are not playing against experienced players because if you are kind of getting away with no protections then something is off.

the reason items like breastplate and nemean are popular, is because they are treated as hybrid items. most items that give CDR are going to allow you to spam more abilities, meaning spamming more damage, whether the CDR item has damage attached to it or not.

im also not sure if you as a hunter or a mage have ever tried to attack a full tank vs a squishy, but they take a significantly longer time to kill! i guess this is because you play joust and joust has no flexibility whatsoever, but in other gamemodes, nearly every item has a purpose.

You have to play with item passives

Protections are so good to the point where you should only really not get them IF you're the team's only Hunter or Mage.

At only 100 physical/magical protections (so like 1 defense item), you mitigate 50% of all incoming damage (bar true damage which is very rare). Paired with stuff like Spirit Robe and Onis (and some Guardian passives that grant % mit.), you can reach like 70% mitigations and be basically unkillable if you aren't dumb.

This would be great if not for the sheer volume of penetration items/passives/abilities and crits to eek out more damage bar pen

... until you meet 2.5 attack speed hunter with Qin's sais or ability spam mage with Soul reaver. Or Nemesis. Or... well, any decent opponent moving better than you.

Mystical Mail is good on Cu Chulainn for example.
