SMITE
Match Making and Timed Queues
Since there are so many threads on these 2 topics lately, please use this thread to share your opinions on the subjects. I will be locking any other threads that cover these topics.

Remember, suggestions and feedback should go on the official forums, as they have dedicated sections there, and we moderators do not have permissions to create new sections in this forum. So, if you feel strongly enough that you want HiRez to pay attention, I suggest posting on their official forum as well.

This thread is just to try and remove the clutter from the General DIscussions section.

I honestly liked it better when timed queues weren't a thing. I remember hating them when they were around early on in Smite. There's just a negative feel to them - knowing you could be playing but have to wait 4 minutes - definitely - to play Conquest when you want to play Conquest for whatever reason such as FWotD or a quest or whatever.
For me is just absurd! waiting 4 minutes or even more to play some game modes, and don't even talking about rankeds because you need to wait like 12 minutes to play just 1 ranked!!!
Meh. Guess this new timing queues cripple my reason to play any more. If you had fun after the game, you can wait for 4, or even more minutes of q time, but not after you had several bad matches, so, after 3 min of thinking, i close the game and go play some other game. Nothing changed in my exp. of teams, like always, you can have good teams, you can have bad teams, mm can throw you to <30lvl guys, or you can play with team of 4 players, but now i need to sit for 4 min to think about all that, and throw my will to play one more match in the window. I can guess this is not only me
i am not even selected into matches.I have been waiting for an hour for a match
i have mixed feelings about it. some days its good, some days its bad. matchmaking has always been a coinflip for me, some days i get a mage who rushes cdr with no pen on my team and goes 0-10 and blames everyone when they go in by themselves, some days i have teams that are really friendly and synergize so well i feel like im on a pro team. it never has changed for me, so i guess thats a bad thing.

i havent had a problem with the timed queues themselves, idk what gamemode everyone here is always going for but most of my queues have been under 2 minutes mostly. the one that has been exceptionally long is clash (which im still not sure if they are removing?) arena, conquest, and assault have been decently short. i like knowing when the queue is going to pop, though i miss multi-queues but im sure they screwed the matchmaking a bit.
What the heck is up with Smite tonight? I never saw the game not find me a match in my life, but tonight "the system was unable to find me a round" 3 out of 4 times? Something wrong with the game all of a sudden?

I hope you realize that que times do not automatically end after everyone joins the lobby. You are force to wait the full duration. So if you are always getting matches in under 2 minutes, then you are remaining idle and joining a que after taking a break.

However, people who play more consistently tend to wait 3-4 minutes for each que.
I have almost the lowest ELO in ranked Joust and kind of like it

I wouldn't hate if the timers weren't so long and you acttually got a match everytime, 2/4 matches I have to reque because "the system was unable to find me a round"

I have got that message only once. Seeing 4 min offer I just left the queue after a minute spent already. HiRez is playing with fire in case I'm not the only hot tempered gamer here. You don't want to let me play? At some point I just say f. it and do something else. It may be the same time spent in queue, but it does feel different.

As for the rest, I'm starting to consider this being slightly worse than it was. Like 55/45 for the old system. Because the code underneath this thing seems to be a bit dirty.

The thing is, queue times change during the day. Which makes sense, right? How about we slow down here.

So the system adapts queue times depending on preset schedule or best case scenario - average MM results in previous queues. To sustain some preset quality level. I would guess HiRez has set some minimal matchmaking quality threshold. Either making schedule or for realtime analytics.
Which
1. isn't really an improvement over previous setup. Because as far as I understand that one it was also reducing MM quality requirements every minute spent in queue (similar levels, MMR, win/loss ratio, other players already encountered recently, more). If you were lucky, you got "90%" game after a minute or "70%" game in 3min. Something like that. Now you just get 70..90% (variable) game after 3 minutes. Not any sooner even if there are good options. Numbers are fictional, but you got the idea. Which leads us to
2. you may not get your game in the new system either. So the main boon of it - queues being predictable isn't even true! And regarding those floating quality levels - no type of queue can guarantee particular number of particular players in queue right now. Irrespective of best math applied or realtime adjustments. Countdown is as unforgiving to players as it is to game engine. Human factor. Simple example - there are 13 players with particular MMR range in queue right now. So what can system do to put them all in game?
3. Also what should it do? This is where it gets even funnier. Even though you set "70..90%" for a queue doesn't mean you would forward everyone below that threshold to the next. At least I wouldn't. Why anger customers, right? Or wrong? This is tricky area. So lets say you are 60%, have top priority next queue and are matched despite any math even though there is still no "70..90%" for you. Or someone else is placed in your perfect good game by this same procedure. Not even your fault, just collateral damege. Or MM actually has playroom for last minute tickets and just sends everybody above 50% to some weird game even if they couldn't qualify the regular way?

I'm well aware this is all theory crafting. But I think some of you at least won't deny probability of some of this. Business, marketing stuff can get dirty at times.
Also it is clear no math can solve human factor completely. And queue type - counting up or down has no impact on matchmaking if both would happen after the same time with all other factors being the same.

I would say a lot more gamers playing Smite the same time would be the best MM improvement. While what we see happening in Smite now is just a change of decorations - my best guess for now. Because I can't confirm high quality games nor fast queues after the changes. Not much to praise so far.

Nicely stated.

I genuinely do not understand the need/purpose of changing the mm system. They removed too much (multi-que and longer times) while barely improving the overall matchmaking they literally took 2 steps back.
Since arguing with RecalledDread just means you will get banned for having a different opinion i will just throw this in:

The new system came into play after an upgraded much better system we had. We cannot multi-que now which only makes the previous problem (too much people playing ONLY arena) return, we got multi-que and people actually started playing other modes cos you could set a couple of modes at once thus getting the waiting time of arena, now it's only arena played again cos people don't want to wait an hour to play anything else, which is a vicious cycle.
On another note, you always got random people to play with you, there was never any sorting method and there will never be cos that will not get hirez enough money to ever bother with it.

It was fine for a while and for some reason they made it worse, Hi-rez standard in play.
That being said it probably won't change, if Hi-rez makes changes it's because it gets them more moneys and they WILL NOT release money from their grubby little fingers.
What is done is done, we need to get used to only playing arena again.

And that is all i will say so i don't get ragebanned again.

what has MM to do with money?

Well, everything. As more people dissapointed in new times que, more will leave the game, more leave, less money throw in the game
I've gone from 5+ games a day to 1 max... Says it all no?

Hate what you've done to the new matchmaking. Puts me off playing, right now is the second time im launching in the last week, compared to daily sessions.
Wanna hear a joke? Ajax says the feedback for this matchmaking was strongly positive. :D
