As gibsoncm9 said, use the God Builder. It will purhcase items in the order you set them, starting from the top left, working it's way to the bottom right (until you have all item slots filled).
Clicking gods - god - god builder (top left outside lobby and games) will allow you to create your own custom list which will then have priority. Just don't forget to save it.
This list (default or custom) will be offered even if you don't use autobuy - that way you have shorter access to default/your favorite setups without having to search through full list of items.
I'm against using autobuy when you're experienced because it entirely cuts out counter building or building for your team (more relevant on guardians/warriors).
For example, you're playing as support or solo and your team has 2/3 AA based gods, but Shogun's Kusari isn't in your auto-buy build. Then you can put Shogun's Kusari in, but then it might be a wasted item in the game afterwards.
Or, Spear of Magus for DOT Mages (and Mages that can quickly apply all of the Magus stacks), Obsidian Shard for Burst mages that' can't apply the stacks as easily.
Magical Power isn't capped. But Magical Power from items is capped at 900. You can still go over with ability and passive effects. Same goes for Physical power, and I think the protection stats.
