It's better on some abilities.
It also stops you from accidentally casting like you might from quick/instant casting.
Also frees up movement a little more (strafing or forward/backward depending on key setup).
You can cancel it yes, but you might accidentally let go when having to dodge or otherwise move around due to things like ganks.
For dashes/leaps etc you probably want it on normal cast for most of them, so you can hold onto it and still move completely freely, and aim without the possibiliy of accidentally casting it because you let go.
As for how it frees movement, you aren't holding down an ability button so you can keep them on the movement ones. This depends on how you personall position your hands on the keyboard, and what your control setup is. If I wanted to move forwards or backwards whilst using my 2nd or 3rd ability for instance, I'd have to let go of 2 or 3 THEN press the movement key. If I get ganked, or need to do this quickly, it can cause issues (ability not cancelling, and just casting, not reacting in time to cancel it first, or doing it "too quickly" and cast let go before you cancel etc).
It just works better for some people, and for me, somce abilities feel better in normal casting than they do in quick casting - things like Loki ult, where it's a small targeter, with very large repurcussions if you miss, or Agni ultimate where I might need to strafe whilst aiming.
Exactly, some people do things differently. I also keep He Bo's 1 on instant cast, same for his ultimate, because I know that in any situation I need to use them, I'm not likely to miss (I know how close I need to be, and I likely won't need to cancel anyway).
